When Gene was running the show, I used to post a weekly column for the Santa Rosalia area and did so faithfully, but now I see only a haphazard reporting and do not, at this point, wish to lend my name to such slipshod reporting. Pam Bolles does a good job on Baja Big Fish Co about what is going on in Loreto, There are usually good reports from Cabo and the East Cape, Bay of Los Angeles has their own website and you can get pretty good updates on what is happening there. But Santa Rosalia, Mag Bay, La Bocana, Abreojos, Mulege, San Felipe, and all the others are only a guess.

Really! Don't you think that if more folks took the time to send in their reports in a timely fashion to W.O.N. that they would be published by Robin and in time that site would become as reliable as what Gene Kira was putting together?
I checked out this weeks report dated June 14Th and I thought that there were a lot of reports IMO.
Of course Gene would send an automatic email over the weekend to anyone who had sent in a report in the past,
asking them for their fish report so I think this helped get guys (and gals) posting more often.
Instead of looking elsewhere for a reliable fish report site why don't YOU try submitting your weekly reports to W.O.N. and see if it makes a positive difference?!
Here's where to send to Robin/W.O.N.: Write an email baja@wonews.com

Doesnt matter............it would still be W.eek O.ld N.ews. Gene's was, too.

The efforts would be better placed on a website where fishermen can update it daily. It wouldnt be as well organized as Gene's was. But if everyone put their general location and species caught in the subject, it would be pretty effective. Then, the details in the body.

Bill, I think that is a sailfish in the picture.

I have all the e-mails and have had numerous contacts with Robin. The issue for me is that when I see that they are doing something on a concrete and regular basis then I would consider adding my report to that format, until that time, I really find that I do not want to be associated. The ball is in their court, so to speak, and so far I am underimpressed.

I gotta stick up for Robin one mo' time. Last year (or was it year before last?) she told me that the good ol' boys club at WON did not want readers to know that Robin is a woman. I found this out when I asked how come the other reporters have their headshots accompanying their reports and she didn't. This is what she told me. I questioned why she would go along with this and commented that this does no favors to those of us ladies who work our a$$es off down here in this industry. I also know that the people who make the decisions at WON do not regard her as highly as say, Gary Graham or Jonathan Roldan or Kit McNear simply because she's a she and not a he. She gets moved off coverage on a constant basis and she gets cast to the side all the time. All the writing she does does not appear in WON as the editors cut information out and add other copy. I think she's doing the best she can considering. I know I sure as hell wouldn't put up with the good old boys casting me off to the side like that but she obviously has more patience than me.

Anotehr reason for lack of reports is people like me. I have gotten so involved in trying to save the fishery that I run out of time to send her reports even though she patiently asks every week and I blow her off for whatever reason. I don't want to but the days just aren't long enough.

well that-s my dos centavos for what its worth.

Pam, you went a long way toward making my point. I do not nor have I had a problem with Robin and have communicated with her a number of times, but I do have a serious problem with the "perceived stupididty of the WON Staff. Evidently they do not see any great financial return for the Baja Fishing Reports and literally screwed Gene our of any small pittance of money he might have received on the side for posting great reports. Hopefully someone like Bajanomads or Bloodydecks will pick up the slack and might well do so if they perceive enough interest in doing so or maybe we all get behind Gene on Mexfish and see if there is any interest in reviving the reports there.

You know, all most of us want is up-to-date fishing information. The problem with most of these previous sources is that monetary issues get in the way.

Even the few good reports that come on a consistent (albeit weekly) basis are usually tied to an economic stream. And if the fishing S U C K S, then the reports sometimes wont reflect this or simply wont be filed.

But in this day of spiraling fuels costs, isn't it as important to know when the fish ARENT biting as well as when they are? For those NOB, it can be invaluable.

I'm willing to begin filing regular reports from over here on Nomads in the fishing forum. But this will come with a few caveats:

1) I am incapacitated right now and cant fish, physically. bad back issue.
2) I leave for the States for a few months sometime in July

But when I am able, I will file a report, GOOD OR BAD, when I go out or when I have second hand knowledge from trustworthy sources over here.

There is quite a network of fishermen on this board. If we all did it, we could have a resource every bit as valuable as mexfish used to be. It probably wont be as fishual as Gene's, given the photo limitations. But it could be a good source of the raw data that fishermen crave.

Suggested format: Location and species and date in the subject. Details in the body.

Actually, I could start one right now with one word..............SLOW!! On all pelagic species at least. Occasionally, people will come across one of these schools of YFT that are in the Sea this year. But its the exception. There are still good catches of baqueta and cabrilla on the high spots. Havent heard of anyone fishing for YT at San Pedro in a while. But if the slowness continues, I will be giving it a shot, back permitting.

Actually Hook, this might be something workable and might even get it's own topic section. If we went back to Mexfish and found out who were the main contributors to the reports for certain areas, it should be fairly easy to get some of them to post a weekly report of what is going on. Shari is always willing to get the info out about Asuncion, Bill Erhardt is a real fisherman's fishing machine for the Loreto area, Pam does great reports of Loreto too, I will contact Juaquin at La Bocana (Les and Blanca can get a report of that area too), Mag Bay Outfitters like to communicate with their clients, David Jones and Jonathan Roldan would be great for La Paz Reports, No one better than Osprey for the East Cape, You can handle San Carlos ( do people still fish there?) , there is a commercial outfitter at Cedros that posts great reports, and Lori Garcia always seems to have a really accurate report of what is going on in Cabo.

Gary Graham travels up and down baja all the time
making contacts
that's why he's crediable to fishermen and women

he's been here 3 times just to say "hi"

just reading about fishing doesn't mean it's really true
read bloody decks once and a while
alot of "untrue" stuff

WON

I sent in scores, perhaps 100s of pictures and Gene ran them all. What site were you browsing? I've explained more than once on here that the reason I stopped reporting had nothing to do with WON. I just don't fish like I used to and the bigger reason: local fishermen were keeping fish they might have released just to come to my house, give me the report and get their picture in the mag/on the web. I felt I was hurting the fishery so I stopped.

(Think big roosters, for example)

Yes, people still fish here..................the "catching" has been a little tough lately.

Weekly is good...........but I see no reason why we cant encourage people to file a report within 24 hours of their going.

I disagree with Bob and Susan. Pictures are nice.............but not that important to the fisherman craving data. Besides, for the same reasons that Osprey gave and for the complaints that many had about Gene's site, maybe it's better if we dont encourage "showcasing" fish. Which, of course, is really showcasing the angler. It encourages too much abuse of fish, even when it's being released.

Bill, I think that is a sailfish in the picture.

Jim......I just noticed your post. I did catch a little sailfish that day, but this one was clearly a little striper. At least it was clear to me at the time. It is not so clear from the photo. Here's another picture of the same fish, and it does not make it clear either. The back part of the dorsal seems to stand higher than usual with a striped marlin, but not so full as a sail. Maybe it has to do with the shape of the dorsal vis a vis the size of the fish? It was one of the smallest stripers(?) I've ever caught.

you guys need a leader...
"too many cooks in the kitchen"

you need a format for submission
and one submission editor
to weed out the bs

Type of fish
Weight (you can estimate with a picture)
Name of Angler
Residence
City where fish caught
Location there on the sea
Water temp
Wind
Other conditions
PHOTO with no photoshop (proof)

no second hand reports like "my buddy caught a long nose stripped beer guzzler" in san carlos
remember fish stories get BIGGER AND BIGGER every time they are told

no names like "hook" or "pescador"

this is why there are not many submissions to WON
they check sources like a reliable news company and need REAL names

fishing reports

Okay, Bob and Susan, you are now the proud sponsors of the new topic. All the reporters will clear through you, we'll send you the reports for your editing and approval. Let us know what Eaddress you want us to use, just EXACTLY how and when you want the reports filed (not just that limp thing you just sent) and we'll do our best. This will be a great challenge, lots of fun and a terrific addition to the forum.

B & S...............the Woodward and Bernstein of fishing reports.

Yeah, like WON is checking their sources................

Let's just give it a try? My back is much improved today. Maybe another couple days. Hopefully, some of those bulls and tuna down south will be here.

for WON its not about reporting news...
its about advertisers
and dollars

WON is just a BIG advertising newspaper
i buy it once eand a while JUST for the ads

advertisers wont support WON unless they are creditable

hook you willing to disclose your "real" name
and supply pictures of the fish you catch

i know pescador, bill erhardt and pam would:D
