Punta Cono
From San Diego, what is the quickest route to Punta Cono from the freeway. The rocky road north from the paved road west to Santa Rosalita is
miserable. Our group has not been to the Punta Cono site for many years, preferring the more accessible 'Wall" instead.

I can't think that any other "road" in other than from Rosalilita would be in better shape. Go for it!

If you think the road N from Santa Rosalilita is a bummer, wait till you try the road into Cono. Since your last trip down, some guy who hauls "Baja
rocks" up to the states in a fleet of flatbeds has completely trashed the roads in. They are 3 feet deep in tire-spinning moondust. A friend just
spent two days stuck out there in a sandy hell.
Have you tried Punta Maria (Big or Little) or El Cardon? Very pretty and wide open. Yes, you have to take the same road N from town, and it's
annoying in spots. But air down, take your time and it's no biggie.

Are you pulling a trailer? If not and one vehicle is a 4x4 I'd turn off hwy1 at KM252 and go to Cordornices and go south to the turn off for Punta
Cono.
You probably don't need a 4x4 but you never know. The road down the mountain to the wash was bull dozed new last year when I was there over 4th of
July. Much better than the old road section near the top.
If pulling a trailer it would depend on the trailer, RV type forget it. I'll find the report I did last year and post it here for you to read. I went
up the hill and I was in my GMC 4x4. But I really was never in anything that needed 4 wheel drive.
Here is ther trip report.

Punta Cono
Thanks for the important information. Some wonderful photos gave me an idea what to expect. Our group numbers 8-12. We like to take 3 vehicles. No
trailers. The road in from k251 looks ok. That would save us much time. Biggest concern would be road damage near the Cono camp caused by the
boulder hauler. Has anyone fished there recently?

Sorry...I usually want to help people who ask for directions....but 8-12 people would really spoil what I come down for.

I understand the concern. We are good campers. It's a grandfather, father & son trip. We have been to Cono many times, just not recently. We
will return to that spot in a few weeks and leave the area better than we found it. Again, thank you for the help and happy living.

Maybe not so bad then....
I am picturing a group of 17-25 year old tattoo covered "bros" checking out the waves. In any case I won't be there at that time. I'll be
at....TRESTLES.

I get the group size concern but mid-Summer, who cares. Regardless, approach with caution. The area around Cono was a dustbowl when I was there in
Feb. (you will most likely see some GIANT bags of stones, being collected by that turd who hauls them north). It sneaks up on you as you head West
and then BAPPO! you're spinning tires.
As for fishing, I was just in that area last week and caught nothing. However, it should be noted that there was a heavy (very stinky) red tide. It
should also be noted that I suck at fishing.

Last week the red tide was a bummer, but only south of Cardon.
As for the moondust, its hell, and its on both the coastal road and the inland road. Unless you've got 3 high clearance 4x4's, winches, and a few
hours to battle through it, I'd stay south of Cono. The coastal road into Cono might even be tweaked, but for sure once you head east from the sta
rosalilita road you're going to get buried. It's nasty.

Also I just read the advice to take Cordonices road - you'll love it until you get 2.5 miles from the coast, then you'll hit moondust and settle in
for a few hours. If you're in 4x4 most likely you'll get through the first handfull of spots, build up your confidence, then hit some of the 4 foot
deep sections and you're done for a while. Go to Sta. Rosalilita.
