any good SD area beach hotels?
Hi all,
I know its not Baja, but so far it just reinforces why we love Baja so much and how San Diego is such a rip-off! We have to stay one night in SD to
drop off a freind at the airport so I thought it might be nice to stay at a relatively quiet beach hotel. But searching Expedia and various on line
sources it seems a reasonable (like under $150 a night) just does not exist! Any ideas or is this just a pipe dream? Jeeez how I love Estero!

It's not on the beach, but it's within reach and good for shopping. Mission Valley has lots of hotels/motels from reasonable to outrageous.
I stay at the Vagabond Inn and the summer price is around 55 bucks. Twenty more for my dog.
Ask for a Baja rate. Their motel in Chula Vista offers a good saving with that. Not sure about the MV place.

astrobaja...I feel your pain. Over the years I have searched in vain for any beach front hotel, condo, suite, motel, whatever...under that amount in
the San Diego airport area. They do not exist...at least from my research.
I have stayed at various great places, but always very expensive. Maybe a place on Corondo Island..but damed if I can remember the name..small,
quaint, Spanish decor, little courtyard..NOT the Coronado Hotel.
For a quick in and out with a convenient location to the airport..easy walking to all things along the waterfront, try the Vagabond Motel near Shelter
Island..or Humphreys On The Bay at Shelter Island..both good choices.
From the Vagabond, you can stroll next door to Pt. Loma Seafoods, Fisherman's Landing, and check out the charter boat marina..plus feed the gulls and
sea lions in the basin. Lotsa fun.

Thanks for the info guys, I kinda felt I was on a hopeless quest! I may give the Vagabond a go. Viva Baja, and not just for the reasonable prices

You betcha, astrobaja...Vagabond is always my choice for that area..but remember, it is NOT a luxury hotel..just an ordinary motel with good parking,
access, etc. I do believe the place has been recently remodeled, however.
It was okayed by the admiral.

We sometimes stay at THE GOOD NITE INN. It is very reasonable. It is near all sorts of stores and super easy access to highways 5 and 8 (like 3
minutes) and in Pt Loma.

They also have coffee ready 24 hrs in the lobby....I know, I'm a coffee addict.

Try this.
It's one of my favorites and it's on Shelter Island about 2 MILES FROM THE AIRPORT in Point Loma. Comes with an ALL YOU CAN EAT BRUNCH in the
morning. If you stay here walk down to the BALI HAI at the end of Shelter Island and have one of their world famous MAI TAI'S.

See what they are asking for The Dana on Mission Bay. It was always the most reasonable alternative in Mission Bay. Not the nicest, mind you. Real
close to Nimitz Blvd. which takes you right to Harbor Drive and the airport.
Get there early and walk that portion of Mission Bay down to Mission Beach.
Yep, bloodys at the Red Sails Inn and Mai Tais at the Bali Hai; Shelter Island landmarks.
I really do miss San Diego.............

Just got back from a bike ride down the coastal areas. San Diego ocean front accomadations and beaches are packed. Supply and demand preclude bargain
prices near the water. Lots of Arizona plated vehicles around and easy to spot as they make right turns from the left lane and stop for green lights.
Just live large and stay at Humphrey's, you can make it back when we come and stay at your B&B!

Yelp Can Be Helpful
One of the major complaints I read about Mission Valley hotels is that they ding you $12 a night for parking (and often don't warn you).
There are 11 hotels/motels listed in the Loma Portal area, which is just north of the airport, here at the link. Good Luck!

Just returned from Sacramento. Embassy Suites charged $15 per day parking plus another $10 per day for internet.
But I made it back on the 5-7 open bar.

Good advice, crazy cat...
We did just that...and the night club is a fun scene, too. Detroit Underground was playing there on the 6th...great music and dancing.
