Border crossing at Tecate
Hi fellow Nomad's
Looking for a little insight on crossing the border southbound at Tecate, anything we should be aware of would be appreciated, such as road signs to
follow after crossing, the attitude of the "gate keepers" etc.

I like to park just before the border, walk across to get tourist card and come back for my vehicle. Itīs much easier than finding a legal parking
spot on the other side, especially if you have a trailer.
If you go there during banking hours, you will have to walk a couple of blocks downhill to the Bancomer to make your payment and return for your card.
This can often take 45 minutes or more, so I make sure to cross after 5 PM or on a Sunday. Then you can pay whenever you want to at a Bancomer.
You go straight down the hill to the light, take a left, then a right at the next light. Go straight across the tracks and straight down the Ruta
Vinicola, following any signs for Ensenada.

I went through there last week with a truck and trailer loaded with household stuff and tools, pulled into the declare lane and handed the guy 3
invoices for a gallon of varnish, 5 gallons of concrete sealer, and a box of cabinet hinges and drawer slides, he looked in the trailer and the back
of the truck then sent me to the office where I was given a bill for 628 pesos that I paid at the bank next door. The bank won't take dollars so they
will send you across the street to the casa de cambio to exchange them. The whole thing took less than 15 minutes, I don't think more than one or two
other vehicles passed through the border in the time I was there. Every time that I have been through there they have been really helpful and friendly
and seem to be more interested in shooting the breeze than causing any hassles. They have always let me leave my rig parked right there while taking
care of border business. After you cross into Tecate the signage is very good for where ever you want to go but be aware that leaving Tecate towards
Ensenada there is probably about 10 miles of road construction that is rough road and slow going.

Buen viaje! Tecate is accessed off Hwy 94 which is a windy two lane country road--careful Red light, green light at the entry gate; usually pase!
Rolled a red light at the gate once and 2-3 guys jumped up screaming. They were a bit peeved but mellowed out quickly. Much better than Tijuana
crossing. Get your FMT & auto insurance thru Discover Baja or Vagabundos over the phone & thru the mail!! Pay fees at the bank in Colonia
Guerero or San Quintin. Que le vaya bien! Tio

The bank is on the left next to the
office when you are heading south.
