off roading in baja
New member here so your patience will be a must. Anyway, I have been visiting Baja, driving my buggy, for the last 4 years. I usually travel with a
small group of two other buggys. Unfortunatly no one could get away for our last adventure so went solo. I went form Puerto Penasco to El Golfo and
then entered Baja just south of Mexicali ending as far south as Bahia Las Angeles and back again. Great time but not so foolish to believe it was wise
on my part so what I'm looking for is any other adventurous people who would like to travel Baja. I try to avoid pavement as much as possilbe (my
buggy is a mid-engine with a cadillac northstar motor). I have taken both ferrys, Guaymas to Santa Rosalia and Topolobampo to La Paz and traveled
north to San Luis. I try to go two to three times a year and don't really care what time of year it is. Anyway, any interested folks out there I'd

I am just sorta guesing here, but I am bettin that not too many folks here that have a vehicle that is capable of going the places that you can go
with the ease and speed of a powerful buggy like yours (I know I don't)-------a Northstar Caddy engine is a LOT of power.
But, I have responded here to get your message to the top of the list again (a 'bump')-------who knows if it will do any good. Sounds like you are up
for some real adventures, and there certainly are adventuristic folks on this forum.

Traveling about off pavement any distance isn't as easy as it used to be... Here are a couple of choices from north to south:
The Gulf Side of Baja:
South form San Felipe you can use the old road through the sulfur mine, it is really rough and washed out and used for off road races. It junctions
with the paved road to Puertecitos after 35 miles.
You don't have much choice but to take the highway to its end (El Huerfanito now), then use the main road on past Gonzaga Bay to Coco's Corner. There,
you turn east for a few miles, then south to pass Mision Calamajue and drive in the Calamajue river to El Crucero (Hwy. 1 jcn.).
There is a parallel dirt road used for the Baja 1000 from El Crucero to the old L.A. Bay road, turn east, past Desengaņo and rejoin the pavement in
Arroyo Yubay for the remaining 30 miles to L.A. Bay.
L.A. Bay south is all dirt (old and new roads) until reaching Hwy. 1 near Vizcaino.
The Pacific Side of Baja:
Leave Hwy.1 at the signed road for Santa Catarina (47 miles from El Rosario's Pemex/ Km. 132-133) and you can parallel the Pacific coast for 200 miles
and rejoin Hwy. 1 at Km. 63 (20 miles north of the Villa Jesus Maria Pemex). Roadlog and map at http://vivabaja.com/707/page3.html from July 2007 trip.

Engine's not in the back, mid engine. He probably has enough power to stay with me on my WR450 Yamaha through the tough sections. Of course he
would have to carry the extra fuel for me. Nice buggy for exploring Baja.

You got me wonder what you are talking about... and what it has to do with this thread... ??? So, I just searched your posts and saw that you were
planning a burro trip down Baja... is that what you are prepping for (and maybe reply in your original thread, which I 'bumped' to the top!)?

David..I got a ride with Pat when we 1st met on a trip from Rocky Point to El Golfo (before the road).... group of about 16 of us...had a blast
Pat took me for a ride up and down El Golfo's competition hill...tire tracks from his buggy looked like the stripes on a "barber pole" ...up, down and
around the hill...WOW that liitle buggy FLIES!!!
