Early 1980's - Help ID this beach near San Jose del Cabo?
I am trying to organize a ton of older Baja photos.
I took this picture of amigos on a beach somewhere near San Jose or Cabo. It was wintertime of 1982. I cannot quite recall what beach it was...or is
today.
Anybody recognize it?

It was 1982 ..February...and unusually cold in Baja Sur.
We had ice in our washbasins every morning while staying at our Punta Chivato Casa Grande. The Three Virgin mountains north of Santa Rosalia had snow
on them. An elderly shopkeeper I knew in town said that he had not seen snow on those mountaintops since the late 40's.
We took this cold snap for one week before the novelty wore off...and we yearned for warmth again.
Time to change locations...seek the sun.
So mi amigo, Dusty, and I flew his 180 with our gals to some strip near San Jose or ? We stayed at a beachside hotel with the name
SOL in it.
We wanted SOL..
We NEEDED SOL!!
SUN!!

Maybe the hotel is still there? A Big Place for those times, had a couple bars..inside and outside, pool, etc. Met another flyer from Alaska
who owned a Widgeon. How very odd are the obscure things one remembers, right?
Can anybody recall it's full name and beach location?
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

Hmm...is that the name of the beach, wilderone? The Sands? If so, any idea on what the hotel name was? Like the marsh we are next to, my mind is
fogged this a.m.

Punta Arenas (I've tried this photo twice - it doesn't come out here)

I don't know the name of the hotel.

I know exactly where you picture was taken Pompano. Right here:

By the time my photo was taken in 1989, the hotel you're thinking of ("SOL" something???) was out of business but that palapa was still there. The
hotel was between Brisa del Mar RV park and the Fiesta and Posada hotels on the beach in San Jose. Some of our best early Baja trips were spent at
Brisa del Mar and I've got tons of pictures but this is the only one I've scanned so far.
Both of our photos were taken looking back towards Costa Azul and "zippers" and the road cut out in the distance is the viewpoint above the surf spot
called "old man's".

First photo is looking North/West from San Jose del Cabo
On the upper right, you can see the La Jolla development starting.
You are looking at Playa Costa Azul Beach
Second photo is looking East/South
You can see the Presidente Hotel in the background
This beach is called Playa Hotelera.
Third photo looks like the Fiesta, but I think it's Posada Real.
The Sol Hotel was down the beach towards Costa Azul but before Brisa del Mar.
Sol had a tipee type palapa and had double wide trailers cut up into small rooms.
Sol serviced the Mainland Mexicans that came over to work in the Tourism Industry and they rented out rooms to surfers like me.
Oladuce photo one can see McMansions on Gringo Hill starting to sprout.
Sol Hotel is long gone and now stands.....

Sigh! Was it not a wonderful place to chill out in back in the day? Much of what was there then has been scraped and replaced with huge hotels,
timeshares and all-inclusive stuff. Just glad that I was able to be there back then.

Have a great night, Roger. Just guess that Joni Mitchell was way too prescient when she wrote, " They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."
