Questions about Erendira / Punta Cabras area
Hola Nomads
I haven't been through this area since the late 80's and I'm planning an October trip. Can you help me with some current information?
Is remote beach camping around Punta Cabras safe or should I look for a campground/ cabana? Are there some nice remote beach camp sites out there?
I want to ride quads north to Punta San Tomas and then south to Colonet. Do these ranches have locked gates/ wire? Is it cool to open ranch gates if
you shut it behind you?
Anything else I need to be aware of?
Any recent crime/ narco / robbing of campers activity lately?
Is the rockfish bite usually good in October?
What does Castro's Camp charge for a trip outside?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks, Curt
No worries

Go and camp at Coyote Cal's, cheap and safe, close to Castro's camp and restaurants in town.

Coyote Cal's is good, more of a Hostel than a campground, but a really neat place. There are a few "beach" camps where you pay the local landowners
a few $$.
Travel along the coast is pretty easy without many gates. Some rough sections that are part of the SCORE courses that don't get bladed after the
races. You can get to San Antonio Del Mar, but it's a pretty long ride on a quad.

I'll try!

As mentioned above a good choice would be Cal's. Right below Cal's is a good spot along with many others between there and Cabras. Perhaps
start off at Cal's and then make a move...

Dude there is no end to the quad riding in that area! You have to go some funky way to get around the cement plant at Punta China. There was a
pretty good post about that in the last few months. Do a search...
Anything else I need to be aware of?
Right next to Castro's is a Fish Packing house and you can buy really FRESH fish for CHEAP!
Any recent crime/ narco / robbing of campers activity lately?
So far we have been very lucky as none of that I have heard of in the area.
Is the rockfish bite usually good in October?
It's always good! It's the weather that can be bad...
What does Castro's Camp charge for a trip outside?
Figure around $160 for the day plus tip to the cappy and of course tipping the fish cleaning station
Any other suggestions?
Cien Ano Tequila and Pacifico Nada mas...
Thanks, Curt |
Your Welcome, Esteban

I spent a few nights remote camping free in my RV near the shore down Cal's a few months ago. There are several nice spots along the shore. It's
peaceful. Erendira is a cool town, I unintentionally ended up staying for 3 days. I bbq'd some fish bought from the fish packing house. If you're into
fishing, it's so easy to catch fish from the the rocks.
At Puerto Santo Tomas, I spent a night at the fishing village, the caretaker gave me a nice spot to spend the night for $7.
Going south from Santo Tomas, I tried the trail but it was too rutted and narrow for my 4x4 RV; I turned around. You'll have fun with your quad.

Hi Curt,
We have camped at the 'White Tanks' many times since the 70's, as have numerous Nomads, like dean miller, David K, BajaGato, Baja Geoff to
name but a few.
Here are some threads written about the place.

The rockfishing is always good for us. You should have a great time camping in this area. Good luck.
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

Was just there a month ago and we camped on the waters edge in the dunes on the south end of Cabras beach. You have to have a 4x4 to get in that area.
There seemed to be a lot of families staying there as well. The drive North is fine to Pt. San Jose.
South to Erendira is good too. South of that I did not go.
Make sure you bring your wetsuit and booties It must have been low 50's in the
middle of July.

South of Erendira (take the road that crosses the river before town) a couple of miles is (was?) Baja Malibu Sur RV Park... I was there one night back
in 2000, bottom photo: http://vivabaja.com/davidlorenzo/dlpage6.html

we went to check out Coyote Cal's once and I am pretty sure the owner was American - perhaps a German guest did the translation ?

Rick is the owner at Coyote Cal's and he is an American, married to a charming Thai woman. You can get a legit Thai massage that will leave you
relaxed and refreshed all at the same time. You will frequently find "Euros" staying there.

I used to have a client there that ran an abalone aquaculture operation. Used to stay at their place. It was always cold there. The best part was the
stargazing, and the diving. Plus you do get a fair amount of "paranormal" feelings around there!
Whoa there, Cowboy - pull back on those reins!
