mainland question

Unrelated to baja but thought I'd post my question here anyway since a lot of BN's travel the mainland also:

Since Mexicana is no longer flying out of TJ I am flying Continental from San Diego to Veracruz since I can get there without spending night in Mexico City (or anywere else). However, my final destination is Hualtuco in Oxaca state and I'm trying to find a way to get there from Veracruz. Has anyone driven this route and if so how is road and what is approximate driving time? Also, if anyone knows, are there any shuttle flights or is bus service available? Thanks

You will be crossing the narrows / narrowest point between the Gulf & Pacific. The only real negative can be the winds encountered while driving the route. If you drive from Mexico City you will encounter windier roads via from Mexico City.

What about flying in to Acapulco and driving down MX 200 / coastal route?

Robert, I sent you a u2u, don't know if You received it.

I checked out Interjet, you would have to change planes in Mx. City, cost app. $2,600 pesos one way.

Bus; For sure there is one from VeraCruz to Oaxaca City, app. 8 hrs. and Oax. City to Huatulco, app. 12 hrs. If I was going that route, I would take what is an equivalent to UNO (who have since changed names), with the lounge type seats, at least for the 1st bus, doubt if they have it for the 2nd.

Maybe via VillaHermosa? With the rains though, who knows about the roads, there has been a fair amount of flooding, it is a day to day issue and I don't know if that route would save you time.

I have never done the route myself, so I am not to sabe on the issue.

As I had to go downtown anyway, and Ticketbus was on my walk, I stopped in and asked;
There is 1 bus daily from VeraCruz to Huatulco
GL-ADO, which is 1st class, (but not the deluxe lounge chair style.)
Leaves at 18:45p.m. arrives appx. 06:00 a.m.
Travels via Salina Cruz
Cost $547 pesos
Roads are presently open on this route.

Hope that helps with your decisions.

I did get your U2U earlier. I guess the reason that the bus takes 12 hours is that it oes via oaxa city and then down the windy mountain road whch I wan to avoid. Tanks for all your help.

Having recently driven this route twice...

Depart Veracruz and head for Puebla, and take the toll road (it's 2 lane but a good one) to Oaxaca City. From there head for SALINA CRUZ and not Puerto Angel nor Puerto Escondido. The road to Salina Cruz is in much better condition. Once you get to the coast bear right onto the coastal road Mex 200 and it'll take you right to Huatulco. BTW there are THREE highways from Oaxaca to the coast and only one is a good one, the one I recommended.

I have done that route a few times but it has been several years since the last time I drove it. I also went their via Oaxaca City and then down to Puerto Escondido (probably not the fastest way) as I was looking for nice places to camp in the mountains. At that time the road was not in great shape but it was a beautiful drive. If in a hurry you may want to hug the coast until you have to cut across and try to avoid as much mountain driving as possible.

Thanks everyone for your help. Guess you can't get from Veracruz to Haltuco with out going though Oaxaca city. Therefore, I'll just fly to Oaxa (via MX city without overnight stay there), spend the night in Oaxaca and catch the (expensive) Airtucan shuttle to Hualtuco the next day.
