Los Angeles to Los Barrilles
I'm planning a trip to Los Barrilles in December and would like to ask for some feedback on the route and timing
- Overnight in Otay Mesa (is Comfort Suites or Holiday Inn dog friendly?)
- hit the road by 5:00 am the next day and make it to Cataviņa and stop for the night (is this too aggressive?)
- on the road by 5:00 (or 6:00) am and make it to Loreto (same question - too far in one day?)
- leave by 7:00 am and get to Los Barilles before dark, with time to set up
Will be hauling a 19ft Airstream. Will have the wife and a dog, so potty breaks are inevitable. I'm assuming I gas up at every stop, if PEMEX is
available. Plan to haul two 5-gal jerry cans, just as a fall-back.
so...
Should I be planning a stop, maybe in Guerro Negro to break up the long days? Is there a better way to break this up into three days?

No problem, that's 3 easy days even with a trailer. I would probably not leave at 5:00am, wait until it's light. You'll still get there in plenty of
time.

OK, an FJ with a loaded 19 ft trailer. Does the trailer have good brakes? Short days in December. Depending on the days you have for the trip, yeah,
make it a non hurried 4 day trip. Have options ready if you make good time. You sound self-contained, there are many choices of safe places to stop.
Christmas on the East Cape, GREAT!

Just did this trip with a 24' airstream. I would recommend 4 days. The latest "Baja California Almanac" has current Premex locations. ISBN

I noticed less truck traffic on Fri, Sat and Sun, but maybe that was just coincidence. Note - several ( 20-30 ?) small road crews from Mulege to La
Paz.

my 2 cents...
leave at 5am from your house
you're 3 hours from the border
not good parking at otay mesa hotels you mention
cross at about 8am (light)
go to el rosario
gas
eat
check the wheel lugs
then loreto the next day
gas eat
check the wheels
then to Los Barrilles
weld the stuff that broke off

Being as I've never hauled anything south, besides burro, I hesitated to make specific recs. Bob and Susan's itinerary sounds perfect though, for a
three day trip. If you have Bearing Buddy hubs, bring a grease gun and hit them with a few shots every night.
