Health Insurance in Mexico
October is the month to "affiliate" (enroll) in the Seguro Popular program (government-sponsored health insurance in Mexico). If you are a resident
foreigner with a CURP number (which requires that you have either an FM-2 or an FM-3, but is free of charge), you will likely qualify. While many
foreign residents down here would probably opt to be seen at a private facility such as Fidepaz (the purple hospital as you arrive in La Paz), this
program is a very inexpensive backup plan. They do a minor "economic study" to see how much you would have to pay, but the charge is minimal. For
those of us living on a tight budget, this is a great plan and I encourage anyone who is living without coverage to look into it. In La Paz, the
offices are over by the hipodromo (the bicycle racing facility behind Soriana's by the park, next to the new "futbol americano" stadium. It cost me 30
PESOS to add myself and my daughter to my Mexican wife's existing policy (she pays around 700 pesos for a year's coverage).

Is this offered through the IMSS [Seguro Social] Hospital system?

I'll have to check on that and get back to you, Dennis, which will be Monday at the earliest. What I do know about this program is that, when my
step-son broke both his arms two years ago in a fall (fortunately, he has an older brother, so I never had to "help" him with bathroom chores), we
took him to the Hospital Salvatierra here in La Paz and both arms were set in casts and we were charged nothing for the medical care he received. But
the Hospital Salvatierra isn't the same as the IMSS hospital, so I'll have to look into it.

Dennis, here's a webpage of this program.
http://www.seguro-popular.salud.gob.mx/
What I got from a quick browsing of the site is that this is a program for low-income families, the unemployed or the self-employed among us who
aren't covered by any other health insurance program, such as IMSS.

Thanks. Me and Google will look into it, not for me as I'm overloaded with US insurance and am close to the border.
I'm just curious.

As I've said before, Dennis, I always appreciate your way of getting to the point and keeping posters honest.

Hey Dennis,
If you find out about that insurance, would you share it with us? I have insurance now, but probably won't in a couple of years and will be
interested in what you learn.
Thx, Linda

Yeah, Linda...I will. I was mainly wondering if it was through a hospital, such as IMSS, where one should bring his/her own body-bag.

We have had several people in the Santa Rosalia area sign up on this insurance program. One of my good friends here where I live is a retired
Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon and he thinks this is a really good program and has been promoting it. It is a type of limited provider coverage that
has contracts with some doctors and hospitals, so you need to look at where and who will provide service. The office here is getting me an approved
provider list so when I get that done I will try to post more information. Everyone kept bringing by the information and asked me to look at it
since I was a Health Insurance Agent before retirement.
If nothing else it certainly looks like a good alternative for those people who choose to live here most of the year and you need either an FM3, FM2,
Immigrante, or citizenship to qualify. There are four levels of cost involved which are related to your ability to pay and the highest level which is
4 is still less for the year than most people pay for a low level policy in the United STates for 1 month.

My husband will retire in about 2 years, and his terrific company cuts one off their health care program immediately afterward... sadly won't permit
you to stay in even charging you the company's insurance cost personally. Really crappy IMHO.
A couple of years ago, we looked into getting private insurance here in the US when he retires and it was outrageously expensive even with a high
deductible. Because of this we will definitely want to seriously consider the MX insurance alternative as we will be living in Baja almost full time
then.... so any information anyone obtains and will share... we would be very grateful!
Thanks,
Linda
