prescription drugs?

I the past we have bought antibiotics, valium etc. from the pharmacias in Ensenada. We did not have prescriptions and it was not a problem.I have heard that you now need a script to purchase these.I know you were always "supposed to", but we were never asked.Any new facts we should know about(besides being caught at the border without a script)? BTW, I do NOT plan on doing this, asking for a friend....

I know that in TJ cops sometimes stake-out pharmacies in order to catch "gringos" with no scripts.

Antibiotics....no problem, but Valium? Are you sure, Sally? There are very few "pharmacies" in Ensenada that even have the stuff. It requires a real scrip in triplicate from a real doctor and has for years. Doctors even have to pay the government for every one they write. It isn't as easy as many people think.

Now....buying them off the street is probably different.

Thanks LL. That answers my question. And to Dennis, yes but it was a LONG time ago. This friend of ours is trying to kick alcohol and seems to think Valium or Vicodin might help him.I say it is like jumping off a bridge into another pool of addiction. What I really wanted to tell this guy is "No, so sorry, we can't get you drugs in Baja".I am very anti drugs.Been down that road a long time ago, and took a "right turn"!!

I think you can honestly say just that, Sally. As you know, things have changed...a lot.
Valium and Vicodin are probably available on the streets, but that's both sides of the border.

Your friend is kidding himself with the substitution method. Tell him to go get help.

That isn't pharmacy. It's drug dealing......or not.
So often in cases such as this, the "drugs" are counterfeit. There's a drug store out at the Mall in La Bufadora that sells, amongst other fraudulent things, Percodan. I'm familiar with this drug having had it prescribed after surgery, and it is serious stuff. On the streets it's called "Junior Junk." I would take one and watch TV for two hours even though the TV wasn't even turned on.
There's no way in hell the Junk they sell out there is real Percodan. Of course they offer almost everything...Vicodin, Valium etc etc etc, but none of it is real.
All of this is crazy, but the really crazy part is they're evidently allowed to do this. Let the buyer beware.
I don't get it.

Only post I can respond to today (it's a very important post), having this damn flu. BTW all...GET THE FLU SHOT!

Get him to the AA. Self detox is a joke.

Valium is what the de-tox centers gives out. It helps prevent seizures, lowers the blood pressure, and makes you feel as comfortable as one can get while going through "beyond hell"

Also, take plenty of B-complex, multi-vitamin, water and electrolytes. An alcoholic can die while going through this. Medical supervision is STRONGLY advised, and I'm not a Dr. You are not either.

There are plenty of free clinics around (Salvation Army - Volunteers of America - County Health programs - V.A. ).

Just a word from an guy that owned four nightclubs/bars in California that lost too many friends due to booze and drugs.

counterfeit....or expired. I vote for supervised de-tox. And I "think" the reason for the antibiotics needing a prescription is people were over medicating themselves which creates new super bugs that we don't have meds to treat....seems that law changed shortly after the swine flu outbreak.(?)

Best of luck to your friend. Addiction of any kind is hard to break. Exercise tough love and don't put yourself in jeopardy buying pharmaceuticals for him/her to help beat that addiction. Besides, mixed with alcohol is deadly.

This requirement for a prescription - Can it be a prescription from a USA doctor or only from a Mexican doctor?

Scrips from a foreign country will only be considered for possesion of the product. They won't work across the counter although we have to remember that so many medications in the states that require a scrip, don't require one here.
This will not be the case with class A narcotics such as Valium.

I'm still not sure that anti-biotics require a scrip. I know it was said that they would be required under the new plan, but I'm not sure the change was made. I've not heard one thing about a new requirement in the Mexican community.

One more thing....there are a lot of medications available in the states that arn't available here.

I agree with McFez, if your friend is going to have withdrawals severe enough that he needs medication to get through it he needs medical supervision badly. There is not a chance I would get those meds for him, most people who abuse alcohol are more than ready to abuse prescription drugs (or any other drug for that matter). The best thing you could do for him is steer him towards a supervised rehab, and make him aware of AA (although I expect he is already familiar with it). Amost all programs will lead him towards AA anyhow.
I feel for your friend, he is in a sad and dangerous place. Just make sure he knows there is a seat waiting for him in AA. Could be the seat next to me.

_______________

Yes that's the reason why Mexico changed their prescription laws is because people in Mexico over medicating themselves with antibiotics when they just have a cold which does nothing against a virus. I know I'm guilty of this too and have taken antibiotics when I probably really just had a bad cold, but for some reason it seems to help, and I use to get mad at doctors when they didn't give me anything saying it's a virus. ( a lot of Mexicans still get those penicillin injections in the butt when they are sick and have all the supplies at home)

The good news is many pharmacies have a doctor right next door willing to write a Mexican prescription for a few bucks(pesos)

Any drug classified as a controlled medicine like Valium can't or be purchased in Mexico without a Mexican prescription and has been that way for lot of years, although people find a way to get the drugs they want.

The good news is that ED medicine like Viagra can still be purchased over the counter in Mexico.

I don't know about the FDA warnings. I'm sure there are some counterfeit drugs, but don't forget the FDA does their bidding for US drug companies that don't want Americans going over to either side of the border and buying cheaper drugs there. Personally I never had trouble with counterfeit prescription drugs purchased in Mexico nor has my extended family that often buys cheaper drugs in Mexico.

I have also brought a few prescription type drugs from India that others on the Internet recommenced to me, and I got great deals with no prescription needed. The prices are even cheaper than Mexico, and worked very well. ( although my credit card company freaked out thinking my card information was stolen)

But again the FDA is there to recommend that you don't buy from internet pharmacies and will warn you that some internet pharmacies are really selling you sugar pills, or worst pills with wall plaster inside! Hey don't they say the placebo effect sometimes work? However, I rarely will listen to FDA warnings or the US State department travel advisory warnings.......but that's just me.

I just had a rude awakening from a similar memory. A LONG time ago, I was able to get Valium in Mexico without an Rx, no problema. (I use it only occasionally, for sleep.) Since it is still available without an Rx in South America (Peru, at least), I just assumed I'd be able to pick some up last month when I was in Baja. Nope: I tried three pharmacies, and they all turned me down. Had to settle for a bottle of Kahlua. I guess I'll just have to send to India for it (or, more easily, ask my doctor for a prescription).
