Hotels La Paz & South

What a change! We are just returning from a RV trip that changed our Baja plans. Our Tow Vechle was hit by a car that ran a stop sign and will be going in the shop. We were fine! Also a spring hanger is failing and the frig door snapped off it's hinge so more shop work. This will cause us to miss our window to Baja in Dec.

BUT we have a backup plan. Some friend have offered to let us use their timeshare in Cabo so we have already booked flights. Besides the week in the timeshare we are coming a week early to rent a car and drive the loop around the tip of Baja up the East Coast to La Paz and down the West Coast back to Cabo.

All of our planning was around RV camping so now we need info & recommendations of Hotels. Don't have to be five star as we favor the nice clean local places.

Thanks for any help!

When you say "drive up the East coast", are you planning the mostly unpaved East cape road, or Highway 1?

Not quite sure what you are into. Fact is that you can drive from Cabo to La Paz on Mex 1 in little more than three hours. You could make that entire loop easily in a single day. So, that said, what activities do you have in mind?

Thought we would stay near or in Buena Vista, La Paz & Todos Santos. A couple of nights in each. Explore, EAT & Drink, lay in the sun.

Don't know your price range. And I have to say that I'm surprised that no one has chimed in with their favorites. Anyway, I have a personal fave not far from Los Barilles. Hotel Punta Pescadero is off the main highway about 7 miles, and a million miles away as far as tranquility. In La Paz, I prefer to be on or near the Malecon. The old Hotel La Perla has a great people watching spot as their restaurant sits at street level on the malecon. Farther East, Suites El Moro. They have cute little restaurant open for breakfast and lunch. If you stay in La Paz, don't miss the opportunity to have dinner at Tres Virgenes, owned by nomad Jesse, and perhaps the finest restaurant in Baja.

As for Todos, although I cannot count the number of times I've been there, never over-nighted. Some really good restaurants, though.

Hopefully, my post will bump this thread up. I know from past experience there are many folks with their personal preferences for this area.

Casa Rancho in Todos Santos has rooms for $40 usd per night and offer the use of the massive fully stocked kitchen/dining room to all guests. tel. 612-151-8892. Located just outside town so very quiet and peaceful and not too far from La Esquina cafe.

In Todos try the Santa Rosa. It has kitchen and swimming pool. If you want to be downtown try Guluartes. Both economical. Many casitas around town that can be found on elcalendario.com/Todos Santos. The Hotel California has rooms for about $100 and you can sing along with the Eagles! Also, personal favorites are pueblos de Miraflores & Santiago. Beautiful area! Have fun. Tio

We are looking at Rancho Buena Vista also? Feedback, anything more interesting in the area?

In La Paz go to the Marina Hotel cost should be about $64 for two queen beds in room looking out at the Marina and safe to walk about at night. Great breakfast at the onsite cafe attached to hotel and good place to sit outside at night with a cold one talking to people arriving in their Yachts. Say Hi to Gabriela who works the front desk, please tell her that my wife Donna and I said HI. You may be able to talk the price even lower due to it not being high season. Rancho Buena Vista is a cool old place, the first resort in the East Cape. The people there are very accommodating, they have a beautiful beach a cool beach front bar with reasonable prices and old time swimming pool. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are a bit "rustic". I stop by there regularly for a beer at the bar but haven't stayed in a room for a couple of years so I'm not sure how they are now. We recommended it to a couple from Canada a week ago and they said that they loved the place. You can get a room only or "all inclusive". Ask them to show you a room before you decide, make sure the water gets hot in the shower etc. you know, the usual Baja stuff.

Punta Pescadero is a beautiful setting, one of the best in Baja. They are "all inclusive" because there isn't anywhere near by to get food or drink. I'm not sure what their rates are but expect them to be pricey. Great place to sit and read a book or go snorkeling...not much else to do.

If you don't need a beach the Los Barriles Hotel is very nice. It's only a few blocks to the beach from there and walking distance to bars and restaurants. Try Smokey's, great burgers, soup, appetizers and Negra Modelo on tap.....dt

DO NOT LEAVE LA PAZ WITHOUT A FISH TACO! Please excuse the screaming but there's a fish taco stand about 4 blocks west (towards the Marina) of the Carlo & Charleys, before you reach Hotel/Restaurant Pekin on the Malecon. It's got a red & white umbrella, and it's called Bismarcito (from the Bismark Seafood Rest.).
Anyway, IMHO the best fish tacos I've tried in 40+ trips to Mx through the decades. Lobster, Shrimp, Marlin, Bass, and a vast table of toppings.
Don't miss this.

Here is another suggestion to consider.
Sunset Villas in Los Barriles has furnished studio and one bedroom units. LB can be a great base to explore from.
Their website is www.bajasunsetvillas.com
Hope this helps.

Forgot to include this for La Paz

I would set the goal to be near the malecon but not on it. It is a beautiful area but there is almost ALWAYS some event going on so trying to sleep can be difficult at times. Especially when the kids decide it's cruise night. There are many places just off the malecon but I haven't stayed in any of them since I have my own place there so I'm not making any specific recommendations. Just offering something for you to consider.

Grilled I hope. Not a fan of the battered deep fried fish tacos.
