Oops!

OK, my passport was set to expire on Dec 28th. I sent the renewal in on an expidited app., paid the extra money, and it is not here yet. I fly to La Paz tomorrow morning. The question is, will they issue me a FMM at the border or TJ airport without my passport? I have the receipt from the app. and a birthcert, CA DL ect. Getting back into the U.S. will not be a problem. Any help would be great!

My experience at both places (airport and border) is that the passport is required. I would expect a major hassle.

I'm betting they'll give you the Tourist Card....especially since you have the receipt and birth cert.

Just think happy thoughts when you walk into the office and keep smiling like you've never smiled before.
As an alternate plan.....practice uncontrolled sobbing and sinking to your knees in anguish.
Be sure to NOT mix the techniques....the smiling with the sobbing. You don't want to confuse them. They're simple, little people, you know.
Good luck.

OK, simpler question! Do you have to show a passport at San Ysidro/TJ to get an FMM?

It's possible that your receipt would work, depending on the agent. But, most likely it will not. Are you perchance considering driving instead? While I would not recommend it, there have been many tales on this board from folks who never got their visa, and in some cases made all the way to Cabo and back without ever being asked for it.

That said, have you considered going to the federal building in LA? A friend of mine got same day service there. Walked in (with an appointment) at 7am with their paperwork, and picked up their passport that afternoon around 3. Might give them a call.

To late for that, flying out in the A.M.! I'll try at the border and airport, if I can't go, I can't go. Bummer, but I'm moving down for good in about 3 weeks!!

Bass - we're on the same flight tomorrow - in fact we're neighbors in LP. I met your wife at a meeting with SAPA. I'll be traveling with my 91-yr old mother so you'll probably recognize us!
