This year I tried something new to get group insurance rates and joined a club called "The Baja Good Life Club". I don't need the other club features,
but you can get BajaBound insurance at Group rates after paying $35 club membership and I got excellent service from the BajaBound staff via email.
I don't know if this has been mentioned on Nomad yet but I'm surprised it hasn't come up more often.
I've been wanting to use BajaBound, but last year for example the insurance would have been $150-170 dollars more than Discover Baja for the annual
policy because BB couldn't offer group rates.
I can't tell you exactly how much I saved this year by going with this new club and BajaBound (the same company I had with Discover Baja, HDI seguros)
because our coverage changed a little and I paid more for a "Resident" policy this year. But i paid less than last year for the same level of coverage
. They are so great at BajaBound I'm happy they can offer group rates now. The rate I got is definitely cheaper than if you go straight to the
BajaBound website, and you save even after paying for the club membership.
On the club website it says you have to join to get an insurance quote, but I sent them an email and asked for a quote before joining and they were
able to accommodate me.

that's a question of risk? are you looking for others to tell you if you can afford a loss w/o insurance?
i always make sure my ins policy includes bond. the mex legal system response after tarffic accident is to throw all in jail until you post bond.
supposedly the bond insurance pays your bond after you are arrested,... don't know if it works, haven't had to try it out yet |
I am with the Goat on this one. "risk" is your personal decision. Me, I have always just purchased the Liability Policy in Mex.------I have never had
a serious auto accident in my life, and never lost anything, so that certainly influences my decision. You may be different. I long ago made the
decision that I could just "walk away" from any losses in Baja, but I certainly want to cover the 'other guy', and that is what the law requires,
quite properly. In the States, I have what is required by law, but huge deductables, so my insurance is cheap, and I except the 'risk' as a
calculation. But I also carry a 1-million dollar liability policy, separate from all other insurance, and that covers me if the unthinkable should
happen. That policy costs me about $220 a year, with STATE FARM, and it partially covers me in northern Mexico.
Insurance is such a personal decision, except you HAVE to cover others, both in your vehicle and outside it. My blanket Liability policy does that.

Liability. Just in case you can't ditch out and get across the border. You probably won't collect on either.

covered expressly? |
without going out to the truck, yes, but let's think this thru. what is the difference to you or the company if your rig is "totaled or stolen"?
either way you are out the entire rig. i see zero difference other than the time they wait to see if it turns up.
what am i missing when i read "full coverage"?

Do you have full coverage at home ?
So you don't care as much about the value of your rig in Baja ?
I don't understand .....
Get full coverage for whatever value you choose. |
No, I care a lot about my rig down there. But the reality is that we will be either sitting 25 feet away from the FJ about 90% of the time.
Campsite has 24-hour security and we have a dog leashed up outside at night. Considered just pulling the fuel pump relay out whenever the truck is
sitting.
But have already decided to get full coverage on both the FJ Cruiser and the Airstream. 99.99% sure we won't collect, but if something WERE to go
wrong, a $1 (or so) a day isn't all that much to make sure we can recover.

Have you gotten quotes from the top three Baja Nomad sources for insurance (BajaBound.com, DiscoverBaja.com, and Lewis & Lewis at
mexicanautoinsurance.com) ?
An annual policy is about the same price as 2 weeks of daily policy coverage... and it is good for a year of Baja vacations!

David,
Annual policies (over $40K in coverage) are about $550. Decided on a 30 day policy from Lewis and Lewis, which is still over $300.
Thanks for everyone's help. Lewis and Lewis was a good call.

I guess if you are not taking more than one trip a year, then see what is the best deal. My $32,000 Tacoma, full coverage with legal aid and can be
repaired in the U.S., is under $300 for a year's worth of vacations.

How many days of coverage for 300 bucks?? "A year's worth of vacations" is misleading.
