SPOT
Hey Nomads,
Has any one used the SPOT satellite messenger? Apparently you can attach this to your smart phone via blue-tooth, no phone signal needed and use it as
a comm device anywhere in the world. I kinda want to get one....

SPOT
I use a regular SPOT....don't leave home without it. Always send OK messages and use the tracking feature when traveling. Can also send Help or 911
messages if necessary. Also have the optional medical evacuation plan.

Only works one-way. You can send messages, but not receive any. Still, better than sending am "I’m Okay" generic message, as found on the original
Spot. And it's not a bad MSRP price at $170. In a few years they will likely have a two-way communication device at a higher price.

They are a great device for safety, rescue, and making loved ones feel comfortable back home. For real, wandering its almost a nessesity. Less
nessessary if your wife/mistress/pastor/creditors/IRS are tracking you.

We just did a mission with one for the first time...very comforting for the families back home (just a simple "we're okay" nitely message). Reliable
and easy. The unit that couples with your phone just came out a few days ago and has likely not been tested/proven on this board, but the company
makes solid products.

I got one and like it so far. The yearly service is a bit pricey in my opinion for what you get but as others mentioned peace of mind for certain
family members is probably worth it. I also use the SpotAdventures website where you can load your trip, write a story, and upload pictures. Go to
my website if you want to check it out. The link is on the right hand side.

If I can just add an overly paranoid word of caution for some of us (surfers, fishermen)...the Spot transmits your EXACT locale and path to it. So,
make sure those who get the info are suitably tight-lipped.
It's stupid I know, but it's the way of my people.

it only sends a few pre-set messages with your coordinates. it is not a satellite phone with bluetooth. it is a poorman's satellite "phone" (one way
communication) for sending smoke signals.

I believe with this latest version, you can actually TYPE in your message from your phone (up to 41 characters) as opposed to setting the messages
prior to departure.
