San Evaristo camping/fishing
I've been wanting to make a trip out to San Evaristo for a couple years. Never been before. Where is it possible to camp? Is there surf? Can I kayak
out from shore easily? I like to fish from the kayak, but don't want to be washed away...
Thanks for any advice!

There is no surfing in the Gulf of California... unless it is really windy!

San Evaristo is a great place for kayak fishing, there are several good camping beaches south of there or you can camp near the end of the road north
of Evaristo, it's a bit rocky but the fishing is better. I don't recommend camping at the bay due to a lack of privacy and blowing sand during strong
night offshore winds. The estero at the north end of Isla San Jose is worth checking out if you have some calm weather. The fishing is generally best
along the rocky shore to the north of the point. Don't overlook the great hiking in the hills above, there is a lot of old native encampments and El
Bosque is a gorgeous area. The area is my favorite in all of Baja Sur.

San Evaristo
We normally camp at the far (south) side of the bay towards the lighthouse - haven't been for a couple of years though.
You will have a wonderful time!

The Baja Catch says that there are a lot of bugs that bite at San Evaristo and recommends camping at Mechudo.
Did anyone experience that?

"The estero at the north end of Isla San Jose is worth checking out if you have some calm weather."
Not only calm weather, but wait for a slack tide to cross over in a kayak. Strong current runs through this channel (Canal San Jose). Be prepared to
stay on the island in case the wind comes up. In any event, stay out of the current - you can see it on the surface.

Did you not mean south end of the island, and if you are stuck on the island at nightfall you WILL be eaten alive.

Great info, especially the anotated maps and photos.
Has anyone taken the road from Cienventiocho (Rosita, Km. 128) through San Pedro de la Presa down to the Las Pocitas Road into San Evaristo?
Would you recommend either route?
Cheers!

We've camped a few times just on the north side of Punta Mechudo, about 7 miles south of San Evaristo. It's a nice little cove with a good beach for
camping.

Oh lordy!!! here we go.
FYI One of THE top surfing spots in the world (when southern swells from New Zealand are in force, in summer) is located in Gulf of Cali.
Maybe you could stick to restaurant recommendations / maps!
ps when really windy = surf not good.

SOoooo, with the strong current, would it be better to go during neap tide rather than at the moons? Is there a big difference between high & low
tide?
Thanks!

San Evaristo is in the gulf, and across from Isla San Juse... I seriously doubt you will see an ocean wave there.
As for 'in the gulf'... a gulf is a proteced body of water, so no ocean waves.
Now if you want to say that Shipwrecks.... 'north' of Cabo San Lucas... a famous surf spot is in the 'gulf', go ahead... but there is no opposing
coastline on the southern end of Baja... and ocean swells make it up past Cabo Pulmo and La Ventana... part of the year.
So I am wrong if you want to call the open part of the gulf by Los Cabos, a gulf surf resort. I apologize.

Cheers! | I haven't done it recently, but the last time I did it on a moto and the section from Segunda
Bosque down to the coast was pretty marginal for anything other than a good 4x4. That should be the only bad part though.

We have driven in several times from Las Pocitas - La Soledad and on down into San Evaristo. Like Monoloco says, road is - variable but OK.
We actually camped on the road at the top of the pass/cuesta one night - magic. I have attached a photo from the top of the pass.
re Kayaking out to Isla San Jose. My advice is: do it in the early morning before the wind gets up and the chop increases. It can get downright
boisterous out there in the afternoons.
