Ensenada shrimp
I will be driving an RV with a trailer thru Ensenada the Friday 2-18 and I would like to buy a couple of kilos of shrimp. The Wal-Mart has a big lot.
Do they have a decent seafood section?
Anyone have any other suggestions?

do you know where the Black Market is? going north it is at the last red light before you exit downtown ensenada, on the ocean side. there is a pemex
on the right after the light. pull in there and walk back to the mercado. GRANDE shrimps are about $8 kilo. many vendors.
make sure you smell the shrimp (in the bag. don't let the guy tie a knot in the bag!) before you pay. if it smells like bleach, or really fishy, go to
the next vendor. there are about 6 guys selling shrimp, and 3 dozen others selling everything else that used to swim in the ocean.

Either WalMart or ComMex, the Pelican Store, across the street has good looking shrimp. Has been frozen.
Stay far far away from the Black Market down by the water.

Whats the deal with that Mercado Mariscos? I bought some "halibut" there for a barbq that although tasty and melted, my marine biologist friend didn't
think it looked quite right. Is it all bogus fish?

That is what I've been told. If you do buy fish or shrimp there, do what Woody said make sure you smell the shrimp (in the bag. don't let the guy tie
a knot in the bag!) before you pay. if it smells like bleach, or really fishy, go to the next vendor. there are about 6 guys selling shrimp, and 3
dozen others selling everything else that used to swim in the ocean.

Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

If I ever find myself in a fish market where I have to give their product the smell test, I'll leave and go to McDonalds.
The Mercado Negro has screwed me for the last time. You have to closely watch the guy behind the counter so he doesn't throw a big chunk of bone into
the bag before putting it on the scale. It's the perfect environment for "Bait 'n Switch." [get it?? Bait 'n Switch in a fish market?? Pretty good,
huh. I crack myself up ]
Anyway....it brings to mind an instance around twenty years back at a BBQ Chicken joint in town........you know, the whole chickens revolving around
on a spit over a fire. I ordered a whole chicken to go and had the guy cut it up into regular pieces. By the time I got the bird home, it had lost
half of it's breast and grown two additional wings.
OhhhLordy...waddya gonna do except boycott the place in the future. That's how I feel about the Black Market.

Yes, Wal-mart has grandes but they are not cheap. Commercial Mexicana (pelican store) across the street has a big lot and better prices but they don't
have shrimp larger than medios.
