If you have a Wells Fargo Portfolio Management Account you get 4 free ATM withdrawals a month.

Wells Fargo has a International service with Bacomer and Banamax were they will transfer funds to either bank for pick up at the counter. But you must set it up with Wells Fargo first and I think the fee is $2.00. I haven't used it yet but if there in a emergency while I am in San Felipe I will use there service.
I also hate paying the ATM fees.

I was setting it up and the fee is $6 for a transfer up to $2500 per day. It is called Express Send. You can check it out online.
Or cal 800-556-0605, their Global Remittance Center.

Stay AWAY from Express Send. The $6 is reasonable but the exchange rate will kill you. It averages 10% lower than the published rate so transferring $2500 today will net you about 25000 pesos...it really sucks. Best bet is to open a free USD account at Bancomer via personal check and wait a few weeks; then the exchange rate is closer to published rates....

I'll chime in .. Hi Keri - hope you and Mike are well ..

WF and Bancomer are sister banks. WF is the worst when it comes to giving a rats tail about customer care/customer service.

As said, unless you maintain particular acct types AND balances you will be charged both ATM and in-bank fees. And no reversing ...

Express Send as also mentioned is dlls to pesos only and they charge hefty commissions.

If you must be able to withdraw dlls, you need Bancomer but you must have a dllr accout with them.

Parenthetic comment: Everything may be differnt in your area!!

Keri to not get taken for using ATM go with BofA and Santander. But you can only access funds then in pesos .. at least tho BofA does not charge you to open or maintain an acct w/them = and no charge to use ATM at Santander.

Another parenthetic comment - there may be restrictions to how much you can withdraw in a 24hr period .. so check that if thats part of your needs.

As always, hope this helps ...

Further to Cabo Magic comments, 6000 Pesos per day max withdrawal. On some ATMs, you have to key in "Other Amount" to get 6K.

just got 400P from Bancomer atm (because that's the most it let me get out) and they charged 27.75P fee plus the $5 that WF charged. just the same the total transaction fee deducted from my account was $340.26 for the 4027.75 P they reimbursed to Bancomer = 11.84P/$ exchange rate which isn't bad.

Anybody using Fidelity checking accounts via ATM in Mexico?

investment houses like Fidelity and Schwab offer free ATM use worldwide (they reimburse 3rd party bank ATM fees).

Thinking about using this abroad. Do you know if exchange rates at foreign ATMs are good with Fidelity? I am wondering in general if banks differ significantly in exchange rates when using ATMs in Mexico (or other countries) for withdrawls from US accounts.

Ditch your brick/mortar banks -- the fees suck. Get an online bank account or similar account thru investment broker.

WRONG! my card has NEVER been refused at an atm in baja.

if it did, and i had to call (while "roaming" on a cell phone) to access my money i would never use WF again. literally, scores of withdrawls in baja and never an issue.

Last year my WF card worked in Ensenada and then didn't work south - San Quintin and GN - I inquired in Bancomer in GN and they had no explanation.

I used to be able to get 10,000 pesos out of atm's with a u.s. card. $5. fee. Now they won't let me take out over 5,000 at a time, so have to pay $10. now. What happened?
