?'s for my 2.5 months in Baja

Back in 2006 my wife and I spent the summer camping and cruising around Baja in a van (I posted the trip report here previously). I'm a kayaker, and ever since that boatless trip I've been wanting to make it back and do a long kayak expedition, and also see the gray whales. We were all set last spring to do our trip when I broke my back in a skiing accident.

I'm recovered now, and we don't have any commitments until June. We're heading south on Monday! I'm hoping to be watching whales at Ojo de Liebre by the 13th, my wife's birthday. I've read that there's camping at the whale-watching site itself, which sounds like where we'd like to stay for a day or two. Is it a reasonably safe place to camp? My other issue is that we'll have a folding kayak and all our gear in our car, and I'm worried about leaving it while we're out in the pangas. The kayak is worth 3x more than the car... Thoughts? Will there be someone I can pay a few pesos to keep an eye on it?

We also want to see the whales at San Ignacio, but I don't want to make the drive in my passenger car. Again, is there a safe campground in San Ignacio where someone can watch my stuff while we take a van to the Laguna and back? We don't usually like to stay in hotels much, but if that would keep my stuff safer I'd do it.

We're kayaking from Mulege to La Paz. I'd like to store the car in Loreto so we can keep some supplies in there for part way through the trip. Can anyone suggest a good place to keep my rig? At this point I won't be so concerned about theft because we won't have too much of value in there, but I still want someplace secure.

I'll also need car storage in La Paz, for when we circumnavigate Espiritu Santo.

Help me out and I promise to post a detailed trip report with lots of pictures!

Cheers,
Andy

www.loretostorage.com ....we keep a car there and it's a VERY secure facility; onsite watchman named antonio, completely walled and gated and throw a few big dogs no extra cost.

don't worry about the lagoon. if they let thieves in there it would kill what little business they have.

You can leave your car at San Ignacio with Kuyima. They have a place that is locked, by Rice and Beans. They will set you up on everything. They have a fixed price for the ride and divide the number of passengers into it.
They run a very good operation. Here is the web address.

Assuming that you are camping all the way, there are two places where you can camp, you should consider in San Ignacio. First, there's Rice & Beans (Ricardo's), and there's El Padrino. My experience with Rice and Beans is that they will not take a couple out to the lagoon. They only offer transportation for groups. However, El Padrino, which is just across the street from the Desert Inn, will take two people in their van.

Now.....this was one of the better blogs I have read....about Baja. Great narrative writing with pictures to match. Hope to see the new blog from your coming up trip.

Have you been to http://www.bahiadelosangeles.info/ ?

If you want a wonderful breakfast and a nice soft bed after camping, you can stay at Ignacio Springs http://www.ignaciosprings.com/main.html
They can arrange your trip to the lagoon and your stuff will be safe in their compound. If you are interested in a great meal, sign up for dinner too.
They used to have some spots for camping but I am not sure if they still do.

last time here the breakfast was the best i'd ever had. maybe it was the 11-12 hour drive the day before, but i slept like a king and then was woken up by bacon wafting on the 5.30am breeze.....

Yes, the campground at Ojo de Liebre is very safe. You could park your van/stuff in the parking lot behind the main building there instead of leaving it at your campsite. Have you considered a cargo net with lock over any car-top equipment? But I wouldn't worry - only be a 1 1/2 hurs. There's an RV park in Loreto - forget the name, but to the right, across the arroyo coming into town. Has laundry too - nice launch beach. Have a wonderful paddle - it's awesome.
