Do not assume the northbound bus will depart the airport any time close to your flight arrival. About three weeks ago we flew north from Cabo to TJ, got off the plane at 9:00PM and bought our bus tickets. Then I asked when the bus would leave, thinking the usual 20 minute wait would be about right. No, the next bus left at 11:30 PM. We got our money back and took a cab to the San ysidro crossing, walked through in five minutes and caught the trolley north to our motorhome storage yard.

All of it turned out perfectly, except for the fact that the storage yard denies access after 10 PM. We just missed it! There we were in beautiful Chula Vista with our bags just looking to get mugged. Thankfully, there was the Palomar Inn just around the corner.

Here's the real deal.

Greyhound and Crucero buses work together. You can get a bus leaving the San Diego Greyhound bus terminal with final destination the TJ airport. The cost is minimal, especially if you get a round trip ticket from Greyhound. You can get a bus trip ticket from Oceanside or from Santa Ana to TJ airport and back. For instance, the price for round trip greyhound/Crucero bus ticket from Oceanside to TJ Airport and back is about $18 USD. The savings is fantastic as you save on the taxi from TJ to TJ airport and back (total $330 pesos).

Parking at San Ysidro is $8 to $9 USD per day in a gated and well lit parking lot. I have seen $5/day lots, but I don't think they are gated or will people in attendance. If you take the Greyhound bus from Oceanside or from Santa Ana or even from Los Angeles and you have someone drive you to the bus station, you will save on parking.

I fly Volaris from TJ to La Paz and back. Costs about $126 to $180 as I wait for the specials that come up about 3 times a year. I take the Greyhound/Crucero bus from Santa Ana or from Oceanside and I have someone drive me to the departing bus station. Cost about $18 for the round trip (Oceanside to/from TJ Airport).

I am a cheap SOB, but I have worked out all the details and I save big time. Parking at LAX is about $12 USD or so per day at parking lot C, tickets from LAX to La Paz round trip is about $450 - $600. That stuff adds up, especially since I go to La Paz about 8 to 10 times a year. These costs are unacceptable to me and I won't pay it.

If you park in San Ysidro, walk across the border, then take a taxi to/from the TJ Airport, that will cost about $8 USD/day for parking, $27 for taxi plus tip. If you drive your car across the border and park you car in TJ, then you will have to get Mexican auto insurance and that will cost about $10-$14 USD/day plus the cost of the parking per day.

Caveats: If you take the Greyhound/Crucero bus, check to make sure that the bus is scheduled to arrive at the TJ airport about 2 hours before your flight departure. Check your return flight arrival time on the return flight to TJ Airport arrives aboutat least 1/2 hour or so before the bus leaves the TJ Airport for the US/Mexico border AND make sure that you allow 2 hours from Bus departure from TJ to bus departure from San Ysidro to your other destination as it may well take that long to get across the border to meet your next bus departure from San Ysidro to your next destination due to a long wait at US customs to get across the border. Lately, I have run into some trouble with Greyhound/Crucero (particularly
Crucero) as they sometimes leave a little early or a little late without notice nor with any explanation.

Take the bus.

Mitch, excellent post. I think what screwed us up was the change to daylight savings time in California had taken place, but not yet in BCS. So our flight arrived an hour later California time than when it usually would have. The bus probably left half an hour before we got in to TJ.

I just assumed............ Dopy me!

Lesson, check and double check the schedules.
