Jimmy resistent padlock?

Hi Nomads,

Wondering if anyone has had experience with high quality padlocks, ie those that cannot easily be cut with 4" boltcutters. We had a rather uncomfortable experience several nights ago when a few guys in pickups passed our house going towards Mikes at night having cut our front gate lock. It was a normal dial combo type Masterlock.

Thinking about possibly the "titatium series Masterlock or one of these very expensive german made ones
http://www.lockitt.com/PadlockHighSecurity.htm#abus3780

I think the key is to get one of the high shoulder ones where its difficult to get a boltcutter to work, any thoughts?

The military were nice enough to come up and do a tour of the area at our request.

masterlock makes a whole series of really hard to cut padlocks...not sure if they're available in your area or not, but home depot carries them.

If there's something unusual you really need, Home Dpo here won't have it. That's the unwritten rule.
I would look in the larger locksmith shops or order it online.

Does Home depot in Ensenada take American Express? WalMart?

no padlock is uncuttable, esp if they got large bolt cutters. the best padlock is one inside a small "can," inaccessible to bolt cutter.

best to get a gate that has lock in a recessed "can" or hole for padlock, so bolt cutter can't be placed around lock.

if padlock is inaccessible they can only get in by using chain to pull gate out of ground or welder to cut gate.

I am sorry you are having a bad time with this situation Mike!

Just curious, since the road has been open for so long, are there signs posted back on the main road(s) that it is no longer open to through traffic... so someone doesnt drive for several miles and then find a locked gate, breaking it open in anger?

I can visualize a local or a tour group driving through that beautiful country, as he has done before, only to find the gate... and if no new signs saying 'road closed' in English and Spanish... well, just 're-open' it?

I hope it can be resolved without a range war between you and the trespassers! Good luck!!

Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions. We are having the guy that built the gate come up and exent the box that the gate latch is recessed into.

David yeah we have clearly marked signs at the front entrance as well as a "no hay salida peurta cerada" and in english no exit locked gate sign at the Mikes/Coyoyte junction. Just as you say so that nobody drives all the way up just to find a locked gate.
BUT these guys were small time growers for sure! We encountered them as we were driving out to put the lock on that very day but in the afternoon. We poiltely told them that its a private road and they turned around. The military has a description of their vehicle. I cetainly don't want to get into a peeing match with possibly dangerous growers but they have other places to do their activities. All the other legitamate tour companies know to e-mail us ahead of time for their tours.

Here's what I use. With the protected hasp, it's impossible to cut with cutters, of course a torch will get anything, but now you're talking about real serious theives.
You can find them at Home Depot (US).

Usually the lock is NOT the weak link.

It is the hasp!!!!!!!!!!!

Just cut around the lock.

Besides locks are only meant to keep honest people honest!!!!!!!!

my brother up in Mendocino has a farm in the back country....had the same issues. Putting the lock in a can device works well, and a Wireless Motion Sensor works as extra added security in the middle of the night. These wireless will pick up motion within 30 feet...can be hidden...will report to the main pc up to a half mile away. Sleep securely my brother does.

If the padlock is connected to a chain, why bother. Bolt cutters will snap the chain in a heartbeat.
