Permit for Isla de magdalena

Not sure if you need a special permit to ride quads on Isla de magdalena? Anybody know where to get one, if needed?

I believe the ferry to the island goes from Lopez Mateos. There is a fishing camp/ resort out on the island run by the Hoyt family... it was damaged
by a hurricane a while back.

eddie......I don't think that a permit is required to visit the island, but Bob and Diana Hoyt of Mag Bay Outfitters in Lopez Mateos http://www.magbayoutfitters.com/
can fill you in on all the particulars. They can also get your ATVs out to the island and/or provide ATVs for the excursion.
Attached is a pic of the MBO fish camp on Bahia Santa Maria at the north end of the island taken from an anchorage in the Bay.
If you were to spend the night on the island, and timed your trip to coincide with a full moon, the view from the fish camp of the full moon rising
over San Carlos reflected on the long white sand beach at the north end of the bay is one of the most spectacular on Baja.......

Bob and Diana's youngest son (Robert) was my son Chris's school friend and we took him camping with us to Shell Island and the desert... Here's a
photo from Ken Cooke of Robert Hoyt, Chris and me on Shell Island about 8 years ago:
Robert was born in Mexico, so I believe he is the 'legal owner' of the resort... I hope Bob and Diana have recovered from the hurricane and the bad
economy so their dream resort can continue! They still lived in Oceanside last time I saw them...

Shari......Yes, they do. The larger building is a kitchen/dining room. MBO also has a three bedroom house, with attached one room guest house, in
Lopez Mateos that are probably the nicest accommodations in Lopez for people who want to fish day trips in the estero or outside the boca, whale
watch, etc.

Shari.....It would be a cool place to relax. Little chance for cares of the outside world to intrude. I've never stayed there, but during the fall
season anchor nearby a night or two each week, and have visited friends staying at the fish camp for grilled wahoo and tuna caught earlier in the day.
If you do plan a decompression trip in the fall, let me know and maybe I will drop you off a fish. Although, I imagine that if the hoos and
yellowfin are biting like they often are that time of year you and Juan would get your relaxing done in the first ten minutes or so, and then be
wetting lines of your own.

thanks for that Bill...but I doubt there will be any decompressing till next spring...things are shaping up to be a bang up fishing season this
year...maybe a quick getaway in late december?? I would love to stay there, are they pricey? wonder how the diving is around there...could we take
our own whaler or inflatable over too? looks like a new destination!

Shari.....Last year the SST cooled and fishing pretty much shut down outside Mag Bay in mid November. The year before, however, wahoo and other
pelagics were around through the second week in January.
Your inflatable you may be able to deflate, ferry across the estero, and haul south by truck on the island to the camp. The Whaler you would have to
take up the estero north about 9 miles to Boca de Soledad, out the boca, and then south on the outside about 40 miles to the camp in Bahia Santa
Maria.
From the fish camp to Thetis Bank, the closest spot on the banks for wahoo, is about 23 NM and no problem at all on a nice day in your Whaler.
Probably a reach in an inflatable. YF and dorado are often to be found closer to the bay, as well as an occasional stray hoo. If you're at the camp
long enough to need additional gas, MBO will bring it out.
I don't know the cost of staying at the camp.
It is a worthwhile destination, indeed. I'm hooked. Primarily the fishing, but also the estero, the islands, all of it. I commute from Loreto
regularly when the wind is down from late August until I'm convinced the last wahoo has headed south.

the permits for camping are available in La Paz at the Semernat Office. When you are at the semernat office tell them you are going by quads to the
island. You then present the permit to the local inspector in Lopez Mateos. His name is Chalito.
Our operation is at the very end of the road about 25 miles from Lopez a long ride for just the
day. Depending when you plan on coming we have houses for rent and secured storage for
your boat trailer and vech. there are also cacitas on the island which we rent. We have a barge
that can pass a standard size truck to the island. We also have quads that we take to the island.
