New plans for trip, since only 2 cars are going we will leave friday morning with Lunch and refuel in SF,a short visit to BajaWarrior's house. Then on to Gonzaga Bay (campo Beluga),stay Friday Saturday and leave Sunday by noon to spend Sunday night in SF so I can have Dinner at El Nido for my B-day May 28th,a walk in the malecon afterwards,Monday morning hit the road to cross at TECATE.. pretty basic.
I will make a sidetrip to Coco's Corner on Saturday and maybe la Turquesa if I can find it, I think is close to Coco's place...

First mistake

Why do you tell everyone where you are going?
You may get some nut case on here that will hunt you down just to mess with you? I'm not paranoid, but I never tell anyone on here where and when I am going.

For example this weekend we are leaving Phx and crossing the border at about 5pm. Going to our casa for a bit and then spending some time at Shell Beach, but I would never let anyone know that!

When I lead a 4WD event/run through Baja, I always post the when/where on-line. Why? Because, people want to know where the Jeeps will go off-road.

It is a long drive from San Felipe to "Shell Beach" (that's next to Punta Chivato near Mulege)!

I bet you are refering to Shell Island... ? No confusing where that is... :light:

(actually, I know a lot of local gringos who have come to the region in recent years have called it Shell Beach, as well... )

Have a nice day on the island!

Goat, my brother inlaw was going to go with me to Gonzaga, but his best friend toll him that a friend of his went to Sf and that he was told by someone that a commando(bad guys not military )pick somebody in one of the SF beaches, do details of where this beach is located..so therefore I think is a rummor,
PS. sorry if my english is confussing, what more can you ask whe I only attend it 3 years of schooling in the USA,(high school).

I don't think Bajacat has to worry about anyone messing with him. After he runs over them in that big Dodge there won't be much left. Besides he has the dirty eight covering his backside.

4 Found Dead In 100 Block Of Parkcreek Court In Bay Terraces

POSTED: 7:34 am PDT May 24, 2011
UPDATED: 11:23 am PDT May 24, 2011

SAN DIEGO -- Four people found dead at a home in the 100 block of Parkcreek Court in the Bay Terraces area were identified as a family by friends and relatives Tuesday.

» Sign Up For Breaking News Alerts
A man, woman, and a girl were found dead in a backyard pool at the residence and the body of another woman was found in a bathtub inside the home. All four appeared to have drowned, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Maurice Luque said.

Friends and relatives who showed up at the scene told 10News reporter Melissa Mecija, that the deceased are all members of the same family, the Pimientas: Alfredo and Georgina Pimienta and their daughters Priscilla -- a 17-year-old senior at High Tech High -- and Emily, a 7- to 9-year-old.

Those close to the family said there were no signs anything was wrong.

Authorities responded to the scene before 7:00 a.m. Tuesday and a homicide team was called to the location by police.

The view from Sky10 showed three bodies covered by tarps near a pool behind the home.

Good point doc. So, if your name is Pimienta and belong to a family that is part of a murder-suicide pact, you should avoid San Diego as Mexico would be safer.

I like you doc, you really know how to drill-in to the core of the issue on Mexican safety. Now grab another beer and sit back down. You must be tired from all that thinking.

Jenny Jenny Jenny.............you must be a blonde..??

My point is, equating this crime in San Diego as making it Unsafe to travel to SoCal/SD is the same as saying a Cartel hit in Nogales makes it unsafe to travel to La Paz.

But I'm thru..... if you don't have the common sense to understand the difference, or to figure out how to travel safely from the borders to your destination, well maybe you just don't belong in Baja.

I'm thru trying to convince people of the safety... and you are right... all this thinking is tireing.

So I'll go get that Tecate, and sit back and watch the dolphin swim thru the bahia.

According to Mexico's President Felipe Calderon, Mexico is a very safe place to visit for American tourists. Calderon also said in another article that, The Only Shots Tourists Receive in Mexico are Tequila Shots." Amen to that.

I agree while Mexican drug cartel violence is off the charts mainly because of Calderon's drug cartel policies of waging war against the drug cartels. The fact is American tourist deaths in Mexico are very light, and if the American tourists themselves aren't involved in illegal activity with the drug cartels.....then you can probably count the deaths of American tourists on one hand. ( you might have to exclude the car accidents, and tourists being ran over. You might want to exclude the health problems too of older Americans dying in Mexico before you get out your fingers and start counting.)

On a more regional note. Mayor Carlos Bustamante of Tijuana was saying that Tijuana is no longer a violent city and has become a mature and civilized city, but he was talking about the recent soccer games in Tijuana, where despite thousands of fan, only 48 incidents were reported, and only about five people went before the Tijuana judge.

Mexico prez says country 'safe to visit'

LAS VEGAS, May 20 (UPI) -- Mexico's president declared his country is "a safe place to visit" despite ongoing accounts of bloody drug cartel wars.

In an interview with CBS at the Global Travel and Tourism Summit at the Aria hotel in Las Vegas Thursday, President Felipe Calderon said he wants Mexico to become one of the top 5 international tourist destinations by 2020.

"you could count on your fingers" the number of drug-related events involving tourists in Mexico.

BajaCat,
Went down there mid April, stayed at Papa Fernandez'.
Everything was great, all the way. ALL the check points - totally friendly.
We crossed the check point between Papa's and Rancho Grande store almost Daily (we need lots of... um ... ice?)
These guys were relaxed, friendly, and professional, as usual... In direct contrast to what we find meets us at our 2 north of Border check points home.
If you are worried any about camping safety, Cruz knows of everybody who passes his gate to enter the Papa Fernandez property/campground.
Also, If you like fishing, you are in a better place than BeLuGa.(my experience)
-GRoUper
ps: there Is a New Border crossing a few miles east of the original Mexicali/Calexico crossing... Heading home it was 25min when we crossed (mid-week around 3pm)
ENJoY !

You're absolutely correct, doc. It makes much more sense to compare apples-to-apples. So, then, if you wanted to point out the crime in San Diego as compared to where you are, you would then make your point by comparing the two places. I can do that.

Let's see, the current homicide rate in the city of San Diego is 2.0 per 100,000 people. There's no reports on that sand spit you are hanging out at, but the entire state of Baja California Sur, where La Paz is, has a homicide rate of 10.4 per 100,000 people this year.

I don't know about you, doc, but that looks like where you are has 5 times the murder rate as San Diego. By the way, BCS has only one-half the population of the city of San Diego. What do you think? Is that a fair apples-to-apples comparison?

While you are contemplating all that, and being that you are an expert on all things Mexican, why don't you read this and learn about what is happening right under your nose down there.

I am on another van travel forum also. There was a woman and her husband three months ago that wanted to see Baja but were frightened after the responses they received (mostly from forum members in Arizona that were reading the news and have NEVER been in any part of Mexico).

Someone referred them to me. I told them of my experiences off forum. I was just leaving for Baja Sur and I go Tecate then the SOC side and hook-up with the hwy after Coco's. They were in a Roadtrek and did not have the ground clearance of my vehicle so I suggested they cross at Tecate and make El Rosario the first night.

They just returned and are singing the praises of Baja after two and half-months of happy, trouble free travel and camping among wonderful people.

If someone does not want to go say, "Adios Ese", "catch you later and hasta la bye-bye", leave it for the rest of us.

I have been traveling in Baja for 15 years. Woody said it best (paraphrasing) - you would be an idiot not to consider the dangers of traveling there. Any OBJECTIVE observation of the news will tell you that things have gotten more dangerous. Is it enough not to go? Or classify it as "REALLY" dangerous? Those are subjective evaluations. But comparing safety on the road south of the border to what happens in San Diego, or some parts of L.A. is ... silly. It's not a religion - it's Baja, a trip, a vacation.

P.S. I still go. I have a place well south of San Felipe. I love it. But I AM also more careful because there IS more danger.

Lots of places have higher murder rates than San Diego or the USA in general. The USA has a higher murder rate than many other countries. Israel has a murder rate of something like only 2 per 100K yet many people do not feel safe traveling there right now because of the potential for violence where most of the victims are random targets on buses and in public places.

At some point you just evaluate the risks and make up your own mind where you are comfortable going and accept that others may not share your opinion...
