SPARE TIRE ALOFT
I like to cary an extra spare tire. Usually buried in the back of the truck. I now have it secured quite visibly to a basket above he cab. Will this
be a problem crossing south? Will mexicustoms want to extract a tariff. I remember crossing at Lukeville a while back and barely made it across with
my extra gas without having to pay.
I ask this because Paulina on another thread mentioned that customs questioned her about if she was carrying two spare tires.

You will be fine.
It makes more sense to have the spare out in the open just in case you have to put it to use.
Before we got the pop up camper our spare was always buried deep in the dark pit hole of the truck shell. It was the bane of my existence, as I always
fretted about the time when we would get a flat and have to empty out the entire contents of our camper shell just to reach the spare.
I always imagined that it would look like a yard sale by the time we emptied out the truck just to get to the spare. Heaven forbid we get a flat on a
sharp curve without a turn out.
Carry your spare out loud, in a good place should you need it. If anyone should question you about it, like the ladies did to us at San Ysidro, just
show them what that tire is to be used for, smile and be ready to go on your adventure.

I have had problems if the tire/s were not mounted - seemed OK if they were. Jim

I've never had a problem with a second spare. Mine is visable in the truck bed. If they are not mounted they want you to pay.

Can't say I've had a spare tire problem, but I've found the prevailing attitude both at customs at the border as well as the military check points
along the way that it's as if my roof rack didn't exist. I've never had it searched even though it's usually loaded.

Marc - I carried two 33" Interco TrXus MT tires to BajaLou a few yrs ago, and I didn't have a single cent to pay in tarrifs. If you carry 3 or more
tires, I would assume that you would raise some sort of suspicion.

I've started saving the best of my tires when I get new ones, I will began draging them down one (meaning 2 total) at a time. I'M really tired of
paying Sammy Diaz $50 USD for bawld tires! 
Mean people suck!

Here's the trick, they need to be mounted on a rim and no problem. Not mounted on a rim/wheel, problem for some reason...
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

I had two huge unmounted spares in plain sight behind my motorhome during 2 trips to Baja last year, no one noticed them.
