Bringing a Motor Home into Baja

We crossed at Otay (going South) yesterday in a motor home towing a Samurai. Of course we were stopped and inspected by a young lady. After looking in closets and cabnets she was telling me that I had to go (she was pointing at a building) and register/get a permit/import--I was not quite sure what she was telling me--for the motor home. Since we had been to the Mainland before and had imported the motor home for 10 yrs, we showed her that paperwork. After checking the Vin and the paperwork on the tow vehicle, she let us go. Has anyone else had this experience? Is this a new requirement for Baja? Or did I just have the wrong inspector?

Not sure,
but this;"Since we had been to the Mainland before and had imported the motor home for 10 yrs, we showed her that paperwork." must have triggered it.
we went over at San Y with RV and had no questions asked.

The grass is always greener....
and so, there is always a better spot in Baja

Leo, did not bring up the previous importation until she wanted me to go get some documentation. I have never had this happen before either, but the MH had not been North of the border in 4 years.

Dennis, they did ask were we going--Ensenada--, but not for our FMs and I did not offer. It was weird and I am not sure she knew what she was doing

Maybe she's a recent transfer from a mainland border crossing & asked out of habit forgetting she's in Baja now?!

I was just curious what would have prompted her to say anything like that. A little, half-hearted power trip maybe.
Anyway....welcome home.

I bet they look to see if it looks like you are going camping. i.e. stuff in cupboards, drawers, and fridge. If they don't see enough stuff, they may assume you are "importing" the RV. Just a guess.

Correct me guys, if I'm wrong. Seems like she didn't know what she was doing or was just having fun. Import permit is not required in Baja, and I can't think of any local "registration" (at least, with FMT) except for RV insurance which is desirable, but not mandatory. All you need is ownership papers and registration from your country. But you do need to "register" your FMT at the border if you got the blank from online. Though, I wonder - like somebody said if they wouldn't see enough stuff in cupboards - can they request some "permit"?

May be - since it was in Otay where some people are heading to Mainland - she automatically did the drill required for admission to Mainland. You told her that you're going to Ensenada - well, people lie...

I wouldn't be giving this incident a second thought. She was obviously confused and just like the US personnel, no Rhodes Scholars need apply.
