LA PAZ WHERE TO BUY A DESKTOP COMPUTER?
Any residents know of a good guy or store to purchase a real lightweight desktop from?
I highly prefer Windows XP in Ingles.

When my PC died about a year & a half ago, I discovered that you can only buy new PC's here loaded with Espanol operating system & software.
I went online & figured out what I wanted & had to call an 800# to order the configuration I wanted.

It was built in Texas & shopped here in 3-4 weeks.
It is possible to have one built here with English operating system & software, but it was cheaper to order from Dell.

Recently bought an HP Pavilion at Office Depot here in Ensenada and it was built with Español which I thought I could change myself.
No way. I could have handled the Spanish, but I have a techy bud here who dumped everything in the computer and reloaded only what I wanted/needed in
English.
Nothing to it. He did the changeover while I visited Sharky's.
Is there an Office Depot in La Paz?

Yes there is. almost accross Sorianas.
I would NOT buy a computer there unless you're fluid in Espanol
The grass is always greener....
and so, there is always a better spot in Baja

I think if you know what they have and what you want from that selection, enough research could be done on the net that you could buy it from a
deaf-mute and it wouldn't make a difference.
Just be sure you're squared away on the warranty.

XP is dropping out of favor. you should get new Windows 7.

I personally can not come up with a good reason to buy anything but a laptop anymore. So versatile. And I doubt that you can get a new computer with
XP anymore.
Why do you want a desktop, if I might ask? Is this for gaming or something?

I bought a computer at Office Depot here in La Paz three months ago. I checked the prices at Walmart and City Club (behind Soriana's). All three had
about the same prices and pretty much the same brands. But, as longlegs says, the programming is in Spanish, but I make due. English is easily
selected as the language for the diccionary (spell check) and thesaurus functions. I chose the Acer because they offer factory warranty support
locally.
For what it's worth: when I've taken my various computers in for servicing over the last ten years here in La Paz, invariably techs have said that
machines made for the US market tend to last longer than the ones made for the Mexican market, even when they are of the same brands.

once offered to build a PC to order for me at a price of $500. USD. I believe Sr. Martin to be an honorable man who would stand behind his product.
I have also found his shop to be much less expensive that the Office chains. He recently charged me $250. pesos for a color cartridge that the two
Office chains carry at a price of $325. - 350. pesos.
The latest word I get from the 'States, however, is that PCs are soooo last century, I cannot easily acquire a new motherboard for a PC I bought less
than three years ago. This knowledge came to me from a highly regarded expert . . . who just turned twelve.

Even easier - Windows 7 Home edition ( pro is similar), go to control panel, then Region and Languages and set the computers language and location.
(self explanatory dialogue box.)

No can do. Like I mentioned above, I tried that but the machine, purchased here, has built in Español.

Looks like it would be easier to buy a computer at Tiger Direct online and have it brought down.
sorry Dennis ---- on further research, you need the Microsoft language Packs installed. Windows Vista and 7 language packs are free, however,
unfortunately, only available on Enterprise or Ultimate editions.

The answer is the same for any language - you need Windows 7 Ultimate.
To install a different language - Multilingual User Interface (MUI) - you need to have Windows 7 Ultimate.
Anytime Upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate
Type Anytime Upgrade in the Search programs and files box in the Start menu and click on the Windows Anytime Upgrade icon. From there, you can buy an
Anytime Upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate. Then your can enter your Anytime Upgrade product key and perform a simple upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate so you
can install a different language.
If you are in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the US you can use
Anytime Upgrade. If not you will need to buy Windows 7 Ultimate, or buy Windows 7 in the language you need.

Install Language Pack in Windows 7 Ultimate
1. Start -> All Programs --> Windows Update --> Optional Updates.
2. Open optional Updates and go to the section Windows 7 Language Packs.

How to change the Windows 7 Display Language:
1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Clock, Language, and Region / Change the display language
2. Switch the display language in the Choose a display language dropdown menu.
3. Click OK
4. Log off for the changes to take effect (This will affect only the user profile under which you are currently logged on).

I have been hanging on to my La Paz-built desktop for 6 years now (has English XP bought in Mexico City) - great machine but getting VERY long in the
tooth. Held off buying another because of my mistrust of Vista (who says I'm dumb?) and because I didn't really want to deal with Spanish OS
internals.
Now that I know I can get local Windows 7 (Ultimate) and simply switch languages - probably time for a new system.
Hook - it's all the about the uses. I cannot think of ANY reason other than portability to subject oneself to a laptop. The dinky keyboards, the tiny
screens (I like 30" myself), the lack of storage, no USB3. Not a power user, but I DO have a lot of stuff I do, from the online weather station and
MIDI keyboard, to a graphics tablet and two book disks (2TB) for the music library. We keep the laptop for Minesweeper.
