Need Passport for driving back into the USA?
I think I remember that the passport requirement had been delayed again, and that one only needs a Passport if flying over and back from Baja.
My daughter's passport has expired and wants to come with us on our next visit to Ensenada and back. She would still be ok with a California drivers
license, right?

They do accept the previous required birth certificate, no problema. Elizabeth's son has traveled across the border a few times using only his birth
certificate.
Technically, they could send you to Secondary to confirm the validity of the certificate, since they up'd the requirement to passport/ passport card.

Last month my son and I visited our dentist in Tijuana, I had my passport and he had his California driver's license and his social security card. No
problem crossing back.

Thanks for all the info. I'll just make sure she has her expired passport as a backup if showing the DL is a problem. I do not have a problem with
secondary if that happens. It's just a little wasted time. Coming back on a Monday morning round 9am.

The Passport requirement hasn't
been delayed, just not enforced, which probably is
the same, wonder if it ever will be.
Mcfez, I don't believe you need a PASSPORT for sea
crossings (cruise ships), between US, Mex, Caribbean,
that's what the PASSCARD was designed for, land/sea entry,
$40 Passcard compared to what $140 for the Passport,
I hope I'm not getting like DK

On second thought, that was an UNNECESSARY Passcard

Thanks Dennis, how about being at the border around 10am as I must be back at my house in North County San Diego no later than Noon. Or maybe it's
best to cross over via Tecate!

Monday mornings at San Ysidro are tough. Sometimes there is a lull between 9-11am when the line is only 2 hours.
If possible- try to get one of the FAST PASS permits that some merchants (and Nomads) may have kicking around. They are given away as shopping
incentives.

Tecate would be my choice around 10. I think 9-AM on a Monday morning is still pushing it....even there.

I usually breeze right through at Tecate, but last May, during the middle of the day, there was about a 2 1/2 hour wait. Vehicles lined up all the way
back around the curve and almost into the main road. I don't know why.

Getting to your house by noon is probable, but certainly not guaranteed. If you can, change whatever it is that compels you to be home at noon, or
plan your crossing around 4 or 5 AM. However, traveling during the dark hours is not recommended.
Avoid commuter traffic. That goes for anywhere. TJ is especially bad. Nothing is that important if you are retired unless it is a life-threatening
emergency. Then you would get a ride in an ambulance. I believe they have special priveleges.

passport is required by US law, but there is no penalty in USA for not having passport or carrying expired passport when US citizen crosses US border.
an expired passport is better ID than a DL.
mexico will not accept DL or expired passport if your daughter asks for a visa, and i suppose entering mexico w/o passport is probably violation of
some mexican law.

the non-passport federal travel ID documents are cheaper, but only accepted in certain regions.
if you can afford to travel to mex or caribbean, can't you afford passport fee?

You can still cross without WHTI documents but you'll probably be subject to additional scrutiny. If walking across without WHTI documents at San
Ysidro you need to get in a special, slow moving line.
