Hughesnet Install
I want to install Hughesnet in my San Felipe South Campos home.....
When I go to the Hughesnet website I see that they want to have one of their technicians install it at my home (U.S.). Do I then just take it apart
and reinstall it in my Baja home?

C.S.I. in San Felipe.
A possible downside to installing, then moving a system was (is ?) being assigned to a satellite that doesn't cover the area re-located to.

My neighbor, John Ewing, at Campo San Antonio has Hughesnet satellite Internet He bought an additional antenna brought to San Felipe and had
installed by someone local.. He just moves his receiver from his home in Sacramento hooks it up in his casa and has has no problems.. He should be
back in camp by November.. I have seen quite a few homes with a Hughes antenna. You should have no problem..

Yeah, BUT .................
As I noted, one "possible" problem that "could" be encountered is an assignment to a Satellite whose Footprint doesn't cover Baja. I don't know what
the current situation is, but it was a problem years back.
Hard to explain to Tech Support that you need a re-assignment because your "alternate" location is somewhere you're not supposed to be.

In the near future once my wife retires and we spend months down at the Campo I intend to set up a Hughesnet Internet. I say go for it. You may be
able to find an extra dish on craigslist...
Tech support could be a problem but I am sure there are plenty of people in San Felipe that have found a way to address this issue. I would not let a
possible tech support issue become a barrier to having internet service. Even should you encounter possible tech support issues you are better off
with the service than not...

The Advantage ...........
To dealing with a Local Dealer (such as C.S.I.-Baja) is that they handle everything and make sure the system is working properly in
BAJA.
The downside is a possible cost differential. At the time that "Hughes" was charging $600 (before a $100 rebate) for installation including the
hardware, C.S.I. was charging $900.
I found the additional $300 worth it and never regretted it.
Others might feel differently.
BTW, IF you're in an area of the U.S. where DSL is available, buying an extra Hughes Dish and transporting the receiver back and forth is pretty much
a waste of time. DSL is FASTER and CHEAP. My (Bundled) Verizon DSL is $14.95 monthly. New customers might be different.
I actually bought a spare Hughes antenna assy and it took up a significant area in the garage before I gave it away after a few years.

I emailed Veronica at CSI in San Felipe as I saw that her speeds and prices varied from the US/Hughesnet site, here is my question and her
response....it addresses the issue brought up earlier of different coverage south of the border....
Me:
"I am interested in installing Hughesnet on my home in the Bahia Santa Maria area. I was comparing your rates and advertised Hughesnet speeds to the
ones on their website,http://consumer.hughesnet.com/plans.cfm#power200 where the speeds are faster in the Power 200 then your advertised $79 plan.
Why the difference?"
Veronica (C.S. I.):
"WE JUST HAVE THE HN7000S AND THE PLANS FOR THAT ONE ARE:
59.99 BASIC
79.99 POWER 150.
THE POWER 200 IS FOR A HN9000 AND THAT ONE DON'T WORK HERE."
So according to Veronica if I did bring a higher end satellite reciever that got the highest US Hughesnet speeds it would not work in Bahia Santa
Maria...

speed is ALL the same
the download volume is all that is different
remember if you "overuse" you sat system you get "faped"
and 24 hours of slower than slow internet
if you can get dsj get it
otherwise huges is great
bill is right
the sat comissioning is your problem on the install
later it doesnt matter
i would too
buy 2 antennas
the problem with used is the radio on the antenna
how do you know if its good or not
its impossible to check it
unless the system is up and running
takeing the modem back anf forth is what i would do
buy nothing less thana a 7000s
and
remember a 9000 needs a different radio on the antennna
it really would be bett to buy it abd have it installed by the pros

And regardless of what Hughes says the footprint is...I have the mobile version MOTOSAT Hughes on Satellite 117W and it works everywhere up and down
the Peninsula, including La Ventana and Cabo etc...so if someone tells you it doesn't work, I've actually used it myself and it works.

A Good indicator that its footprint includes Mexico.

Yea, but unless you are hooked to SAt Mex 5 in your US location you will not be able to change just for your Mexico setup. I used to carry my modem
back and forth from the states, but I made sure to set up on Sat Mex 5 in the US. I still had to do an install when I moved the modem as it was not
a simple hookup and go. If I can learn to do all this then anyone else can too, but it is not as simple as plugging in a modem to make it happen.
If you can find an installer that will actually instruct you on how to do it, then after a time or two you can pick up the process. The first time
you have to aim your dish at home and your dish in Mexico at the satellite and then do an actual install.

There is someone at or around South Campos that does the set up and also sets up jointly most members as a group on one unit.
We at our campo are going this route soon.

Wanted to add before this post gets too old. DON'T get a 9000-based system in the US. It will not work in Baja or really anywhere outside of a few
miles of it's initial location. The HN7000S is the modem you want.
That's also why the speed plans Veronica referred to are different. The newer 9000's use Ka band and the 7000's use Ku band. At the moment, Ku band
service is not quite as fast as Ka.

I tried for a while to get someone to pick up my Hughesnet dish and I had no takers and ended up throwing it away.
I hate when that happens
