Anyone here stream using Netflix in Baja?

Hi all,

We've been using Netflix for almost 4 years now, we have the 3 movies out at a time and unlimited streaming package. Up until a few weeks ago it worked pretty well 95% of the time. Our internet is via Starband. Lately the movies/shows seem to buffer ok at a good speed and then I get an error message saying its to do with my internet connection. I know it can't be this because the speed is fairly high. I tried it on 2 laptops and a desktop all using Win XP, made sure the Microsoft silverlight (which Netflix uses for streaming) is current as are all my Microsoft updates... Not sure what gives here, anyone else been experiencing problems?
May have to ditch the streaming and try another service, any suggestions? Netflixes selection is average at best anyway...

This may not be your problem, but recently we switched from a starband system to a terrestial Mexican internet provider and had several problems. 1) I could receive e-mail, but not send any e-mail, this turned out to be a port problem in MS Outlook. 2) I could not connect to any US based Streaming sites like HULU, Pandora, or Netflix. I would get a "Sorry but it appears you are in Mexico and we are Not licensed there, so buzz off" message. I think by using an IP proxy service we can get around thi also, I am checking this out.

I just use a software that changes your IP from Mexico to the US and have no problems.

Hi Guys, I don't think its that, just to see once I tried it at a hotel in Ensenada and I got the "pee off you're not in the US" message too. Have to try calling their 1-866 no. for tech support, it just kinda sucks using Magicjack and sat internet!

Around June 7th Starband changed the way they transmit on G18 123 West satellite. We're in BCS and were already on teetering on the edge of reception even with a 2 watt transmitter and a 1.2 meter dish. The change they made pushed us over the edge and our signal became very weak and would drop out completely for several hours per day-very unreliable and frustrating. When we were on line there was no obvious difference in download speeds after the change.

Do you know how to check your ebnO? It should optimally be around "7" or higher I think. We'd only been able to get "6" or so after they made the sat. change a few years ago. The change in June brought us down to 5 and often it would drop below that and we'd loose the signal.

I have no idea if that's your problem or if you're even on the same satellite Astro, but it's interesting that your problem is recent.

We had to switch to Hughes which is funky, and may resort to VSat someday.

When you're on Starband, you're on a US IP, not Mexico. So it's something else. Astrobaja is in Baja Norte, should be well within the footprint, and as far as I remember on 121W. I would call support, or send an email to you-know-who. (Not me, I haven't a clue, so that leaves one other possibility).

I also use Easy Hide Ip and highly recommend it. They offer a free 3 day trial. It will slow your speed a little. So I turn it off when its not necessary.

A friend uses hidemyass.com, its more but he recommends it as well. Cost about $80 a year.

FWIW we would get the same problems with netflix in Fort Worth using cable....frustrating to be three quarters into a movie and the error message comes up. In all fairness it could be our blue-ray player that's causing it though.

I thought Netflix announced recently that they have an agreement that allows them to distribute in Mexico and other Latin American countries.

We have been using Witopia for our VPN. Very reliable. 60.00/year.

As he warned, it is slow sometimes, but has worked very well this past year.

Netflix so far has only been introduced into Canada. Robertos right though its not a non US IP issue with me, Starband has a US IP. So it must be some issue with Netflix...

Ah ok Mike so you've been having issues too eh? I just changed mine to a different plan without streaming until they get thier @#$% together. We get our movies mailed to a po box in Coronado and then International mail service in Ensenada (ave pedro loyola) picks it up twice a week.

I'm thinking about other online streaming services such as Hulu plus and Amazon on demand

For those of you who use software like this to switch your IP address to a US based address, are you able to view Hulu videos? Hulu detects and blocks some proxy servers. If you're using a proxy and can use Hulu, I'd like to know the name of the software.

Thanks
