Punta Mechudo cellular coverage?

My wife and I spent 6 weeks in Baja last winter. We loved it. We're planning another trip this winter. We work on the web and wish cellular coverage was a little better but can't complain.

We're thinking about camping for a while in the Punta Mechudo area. Does anyone know if cellular coverage from La Paz extends this far?

We have seen Mexicans come into Ensenada Verde and hike up the hill to the north and use their cell phones. It is pretty much line of sight from there to LaPaz.

Ensenada Verde is a shallow indentation about 12 km north of San Evaristo. It is in a notch of the green and red cliffs of Cabo Machudo. It is just after the high winding road that goes inland but before you get back down to the flat desert on the way to San Evaristo. No facilities, rough road in. GBaines

Thanks for the replies. We've got a banda ancha, hope it works. It would be nice to be able to check in.

A couple of years ago I needed to make a call from that area. We went to Rancho Coyote (you pass it about five miles before the road goes inland at Mechudo Pt). The lady at the ranch took us up on a nearby hill, from which she made the call on her cell phone and we were able to contact the people we needed to contact (rural pay phone service).

That is a nice camping area. On one such trip, we were "treated" to thousands of squid completing some sort of mating/life cycle and throwing themselves up on the beach to die, despite the best efforts of our kids to throw them back in.

There most certainly is but one side to every story: the TRUTH. Variations of it are nothing but lies.

Lencho - Telcel GSM range is baffling. Our ranch on the coast due west of LA Paz, and is barely 35 kms from the tower on top of the mountain above La Paz. The old CDMA cellular worked perfectly. Telcel warned us they were shutting down CDMA and we bought a new domestic GSM cellular.

The front gate of the ranch gets perfect GSM reception, the office down below in the valley gets perfect reception, our house, sited much higher than both gets nothing on the new system . . .

GWBaines - do you mean (Ensenada Verde is) SOUTH of San Evaristo? The only place I can think of NORTH of San Evaristo is Nopolo . . .

OOPS That'a what you get when I answer questions first thing in the morning! Yes Ensenada Verde is south of San Evaristo, mixed in the Cabo Machudo coast.
Sorry GWBaines
