Pemex Stations
Could soneone establish the method Mexico uses for opening new stations.
For instance out near to my house there is a new Pemex that is complete but hasn't opened for at least the last two years.
on another thread there has been a lot of discussion about a pemex in El. R????? looks to me like they really need one in Catavina. it would make
that part of the trip more relaxing.

The Pemex in El Rosario is owned by Baja Nomad member 'BajaCactus' (who owns the beautiful motel next door, too).
76 miles away is Cataviņa where (in 1974) a Pemex was opened to service the new highway's traffic... across the highway from the hotel. Next door to
the Pemex was 'Parador' or rest area... sunken, air conditioned relaxation area, snack bar, bathrooms... as the Mexican government believed there
would be a need for rest areas with such facilities to service the new highway's traffic. There was no town of Cataviņa in 1973... Only the nearby
Rancho Santa Ynez with food and bunkhouse lodging.
The Pemex and Parador eventually closed... The Pemex here and at Parador Punta Prieta (60 miles south) both failed do to poor management by the ejidos
who were 'given' the stations to run, as well as other business difficulties in this remote region.
Employees were few and far away, banks (for securing the money) were a hundred+ miles away in either San Quintin or Guerrero Negro, and Pemex would
only extend so much credit for fuel deliveries.
However, with the closing of Cataviņa and Parador Punta Prieta (The L.A. Bay highway junction), 'independent' gasoline distributors immediately filled
the void and even today, sell gasoline from 5 gallon cans at these locations for about a dollar a gallon above Pemex prices. One thing is good besides
having gas there if you need it... you get a true 5 gallons for the money!

Looks like in town they build stations next door to each other then where they are needed most you have to rely on a guy selling it out of a 55 gallon
drum. look's like the intersection of bay of L.A. and highway 1 would be a perfect spot for a new Pemex people traveling through there shure could use
a safety net. I can rember several years ago I had some anxious moments passing through that area pulling a 5th wheel travel trailer.

Safety net always in place, thanks to business-minded people. Gas has been sold there for ever, out of 5 gallon cans... as I said above. There are 2
Pemex stations at Bahia de los Angeles, 41 miles east of Hwy. 1.

Buying gas out of a 55 gallon drum is not a very sensebale option.you never know what they might do to get that HONEST 5gal measurement just to make
shure I could ask if they have the DAVID K. seal of approval , or check to see if they Know the Nomad Seceret Handshake.Geeeeeeeeeeessssssss DAVID

Why do you keep repeating "55 gallon drum"??? I have never, ever bought gas at the two places mentioned out of a drum.
Alfonso (the former gasoline salesman at Cataviņa) made the 152 mile round trip to El Rosario to refill his 5 gallon cans... and only added a dollar a
gallon to the price for his round trip, truck expense, and personal income.
Now, last time I bought gas there a different person was there, and said Alfonso was retired from selling gas. He was a bit higher, but I was using
dollars and not pesos... I appreciated the service to insure I made it to El Rosario, coming from Gonzaga Bay (where that Pemex was closed for
Siesta).
Anyway, I explained why the two Pemex stations were closed (you see the abandoned buildings, right?) at Cataviņa and Parador Punta Prieta.
There are also abandoned Pemex stations at San Agustin and Rosarito (south of Punta Prieta)... probably for the same reasons.

It's my understanding that currently there are 2 (possibly 3) reasons it still hasn't opened:
1. PEMEX will not extend credit to the owner to fill the two grades of gasoline and deisel tanks and he doesn't have the cash to pay for it himself.
2. The electric transformer that the owner paid for and CFE installed is only big enough for the OXXO mart and he needs to buy, and have installed, a
larger one for the PEMEX operation and he doesn't have the cash to pay for it.
(3. The main reason that and he doesn't have the cash to pay for 1 and 2 above is that he is incarcerated)

For years you could fill up at the La Pinta hotel at Catavina from pumps just outside the Hotel and slightly north of the main building. What
happened to that concession??? I always found it a lot more convenient than the PEMEX directly across the street.
In all the years of travelling in Baja (about 55 years) I never used a PEMEX bathroom once----------why would ANYBODY use those "bathrooms"???

To eleminate any futher stress on our journeys up and Baja Maybe we could get David K. to Publish a map of all his approved gas stops up and down Baja
keeping ind mind most of us dont ride in one of those gas sipping Toy trucks.

BOLA Turn Off Gas
J.P., for what it is or is not worth, the last time I got some "backup" fuel at the BOLA road it was from a drum standing in the back of a pickup.
There was also another entrepenour selling from 5 gal jugs.
Didn't want you to doubt your memory ...

Hwy. 1:
Well, since Baja Cactus (El Rosario) is an EASY (under) one tank drive from my home (280 miles)... I don't need another in between!
If going south, the next fill up is at Villa Jesus Maria that includes a taco or tamale stop next door...
Then the station next to the harbor at Santa Rosalia, on the east side of the road right next to the harbor.
Then in Loreto, at the station on the north part of town, not on the main drag.
I haven't been further south then Ligui in almost 10 years, so I won't comment on others.
Hwy. 5:
El Dorado Ranch Pemex north of San Felipe, by the Rockadile sign. Gonzaga Bay Pemex (but not from 2-4 pm when they close).
Hwy. 2:
Tecate... on the north side, east of town.

Totaly agree about public restrooms anywhere.To this day I still carry the necessarys in my vehicle . just in the last few years you have been able
to walk by a public facility in Mexico without becoming ill and losing your cookies.
