never been to San Quintin
Never been to San Quintin, wanted to know places to stay?
We have not trailered in Baja before, only have a 4 x 2 ,not much experience with boats, Gerda has never fished, but figured life is a bit too
short and I want to go to San Quintin.
Have a small 12 ft boat and want to stay and fish locally there in San Quintin for about three days before heading on to Bajia de Las Angeles for
about three days, Never been there either but the pictures look nice.
Wanted to know how secure a boat or Explorer and trailer would be left for the day? Do the hotels provide security?
Where do you park your vehicle/trailer after you launch, back at hotel maybe?
Will probebly be able to head down there in January, would you need a reservation at this time of year?

The below is best BUT there is word that they may be closed for the winter.
Old Mill RV Park & Motel
On eastern shore of inner San Quintin Bay, 4 miles west off of
Hwy. 1, via dirt road. Generator powered electricity.
Hook-ups. Apdo Postal 90, Valle de San Quintin,
BC, Mexico 223 Via de San Ysidro, Suite 7, San Ysidro, Ca. 92173
This is good too.

don eddies landing is a good choice. inexspensive rooms .good food. boat launch. everything you need. far enough from town to be safe and wide
parking lot (lighted last time i was there) plenty of trailer parking. And ice machine.

I recommend Jardines de Baja for your hotel stay.
12 foot boat? OK for fishing in the bay but for heading outside the bay towards the island I would definitely recommend a bigger boat. There I
recommend Manuel at San Quintin Sportfishing:

Fishing in a 12 ft boat will limit you to the bay. But you can go out with a skipper which might be more fun.
Don Eddies is a dump. The owner no longer cares for the place and it is very run down. I would hate for this to be your first impression of SQ. Old
mill is a little better but I also heard it was shut down. Many boaters stay at Jardines or Mission San Quintin. Both are nice.. You can still
launch your boat down by the old mill and have someone watch your car and trailer.

consider a change?
If you are not dead set on San Quintin maybe you'd consider the Ensenada area, particularly Punta Banda, about 17 miles south of Ensenada. Motel(s)
available, beach launching for your 12 footer and your tow rig/trailer are secure after launching.
You can fish almost immediately after launching then continue fishing by following the coastline for 3-4 miles.
Obviously conditions need to be such that you could fish in safety, but we take our 12 footer out on a regular basis and in safety.
The surrounding waters have been almost like a lake the past 5-6 days which is pretty unusual but there are a lot of "normal" days that you can launch
a 12 footer and fish in safety.
If when you arrive conditions are to rough to launch/fish your boat, you could fish with our local panga service (Vonny's Panga's) and have a great
time!
Just do it!

Link to Carlos Fiesta's Baja Expo has a lot of info., but is a bit dated (Carlos died so his site isn't updated anymore). Scroll up from the link for
sportfishing info.
The Desert Inn/ La Pinta is now the Mision Santa Maria Hotel.
Juanita & David ('PorkyPig' on Nomad) no longer works at the Cielito Lindo Motel, and the BajaSi.com link is no longer good.
I would second recommendations by Ron 'BajaGringo' on Jardines if you find Don Eddies or Old Mill not open or acceptable. Jardines is closer to the
highway, and not on the bayshore. Fancy restaurant there, good food.

You need to know the high/low tides at San Quintin - can't launch at some spots at low tide. Also, 1/2 price margaritas at Jardine's happy hour.

Go with "BajaGringos" advice. He lives there and is a one man chamber of commerce when it comes to San Quintin. Personally, I stay away from the
beaten path away from tourist's.

We've stayed at several of the listed hotels over the years. However, in the past several years, Jardines has been our choice by a mile. The
restaurant is as good as you are going to find in the area (note- It is closed Mondays).
The Jardines is located on beautiful grounds. The rooms are sparkling and very affordable. But the biggest draw for us is that it is family run, and
the warm hospitality can not be beaten.
A couple of interesting notes for those who have stayed there there, since it was expanded to 20 rooms last year, they offer select rooms for those
traveling with pets. Second, Guillermo, the owner, recently told me that he has plans to build "cabanas" ( I take it he meant cabins), behind the
current building, to turn his place into more of a destination resort.

Hey John,
the flights to Hawaii are at a ll time low right now. Ask Gerda what she thinks about going to the Islands instead of Baja?

DO NOT leave your boat or car unattended anywhere near these spots. Even if they are inside a locked gate.

Just a few years back, one could find very affordable flights to Hawaii.
Last couple of years, it's been crazy. I don't know what occupancy rates are in Hawaii hotels are, but it seems to me that the airlines are screwing
their economy.
Not uncommon to have to pay $600-$800 per person for flights. Consider a family. You might pay over $2,000 just to get there and then pay for your
hotel.

Oops, meant to say low fares not high, there is just a lot of doom and gloom being put forward for this guys trip including his choice of boat.
Haven't had a bad trip yet....

Hello everyone,
Thanks for all the tips and advice, appreciate it very much.......
Hawaii was mentioned, Gerda wants to go there really bad, but Its not my thing, and i get to be the one picking this years trips, have to include
places and time for her to snorkel though, not just try and fish non-stop.....
I am a bit confused as to where is the safest and best choice to leave ones vehicle and trailer while out in the water, and is parking them at the
hotel over-night fine?

All I know is that the two outfits I mentioned do have a night time security guy walking around. never...never had a issues there. I did get my
Corvette smashed into once............at the San Francisco Hilton with all their in the garage security
