Boat Importation Permit & USD $400 deposit.
as of june 2011. the permit is good for 10 years. you get it back (deposit) when you cross back, but if you leave it (the boat) there, 10 years
seems a long time to hang on to a deposit. $400 is not small change. i wanted the permit just in case i'm asked for it, kinda of like the tourist
visa. also, i do leave my boat there for sometimes 6 months, before i tow it back.
i was told by someone at vagabundos that this is now required...even if you tow, and leave on the same trip.
if they don't want you to reuse it, why not make it good for a year, instead of 10 without a deposit. $400 is too much. no offense, but i'm not
comfortable with them holding a $400 deposit.
can anyone confirm this, or have an opinion as to why?
this is not just for boats.

Where are you taking the boat? I recently Imported my boat in Baja Sur and there wasn't any requirement for a $400. dollar deposit. Apparently this
is only for the mainland and also a deposit is required for an auto as well. I have been in Baja for 7 years and there is no requirement for a
deposit for boat or car.. La Paz is the closest from Loreto and it was only $50 to Import the boat there...

check the website. i was trying to do this online. i'm thinking mexico is mexico...nothing i read mentioned only needed in the mainland. maybe i
missed it. i hope.

This has become a HUGE can of worms over here. I wish I could clarify it for you, but it changes from day to day, Aduana agent to Aduana agent.
GENERALLY, over here on the mainland, they are forcing most everyone who tows in ANY kind of trailer, toys, RVs to post a bond that is refundable when
the items are legally checked out of the country. Supposedly, if you're even one day late, you lose the bond. The bond lasts only the length of your
FMM. That is the date to be out by. FM2/3 holders can get the bond extended by showing their renewed visa.
-This is NOT the All of Mexico permit. That is a separate permit.
-Truck campers are supposedly exempt from the bond; though I have heard of attempts to charge even them.
I have not heard of anyone being charged this bond for a boat. The 50$ Temporary Importation Permit still applies to a boat.
Are you sure the bond you posted wasnt for the trailer it was on, instead of the boat?
The supposed "hassle-free" zone that has existed along HWY 15 from the border to Empalme in Sonora is basically a thing of the past. Amazingly (and
dangerously), we have received reports that they are requiring you to carry your ORIGINAL title to vehicles, as well as your current registration.
It's always been a big no-no to carry your original title around as if it is lost or stolen, someone can claim title to a vehicle by forging
signatures.
Anyway, there are reports of hours long waits at the Aduana station at k21 on Hwy 15, as people line up to get their paperwork copied, bonds paid,
etc. Many are turning back, after having driven 24-48 hours and dont have the right paperwork.
It would not surprise me if Baja and the Puerto Penasco area loses it's "free zone" designation pretty soon. Mexico is really starting to crank up the
taxation spigot on visitors and temporary residents.

its only on the mainland....
as for the deposit...
if you give it to the bank it'll be returned
i had $21,000usa they held a couple of years ago...
oh yea
i was worried...but they returned every penny
