Nikon D-40 shutter-release problem...any advice?
I have a slight problem with one of my cameras..a Nikon D-40 with Nikkor 18-15mm lens.
I get a continous error message on the screen:
"Error: press shutter release button again."
It won't release. I really hope I don't have to send it in, and that's why I'm asking any and all camera buffs for your advice on doing a fix here in
Baja.
I've researched it online, but not much help there...other than SEND IT IN. The camera Menu does not offer any obvious solutions, either.
Any ideas? Thanks.

That's a new one on me. I have had a D70s, D80, and now D7000 and not experienced that problem.
Have you seen this???? I would try this after coffee, but before the happy hour.

Try removing all the batteries and memory card, and see if can re-set itself after they are re-installed..
Also, do you get the same message with a different lens attached...

Another thanks, but tried that first, and No Go. I think I may have worn the damn thing out! Checking my pc's pic memory, it shows almost 10,000
digitals since I bought it a couple years ago....I think I may have left the rapid-shutter feature on for a night or two.

It only does it (or doesn't do it) with that one lens? Is it the Nikon lens that came with it? check out how all the thingies on the coupler move.
Maybe..... I have the D60. Wish I had the 7000

Amigo.. Your problem maybe having to take so many images to keep up with all those "co=pilot(s)" your hanging around..

Roger,
You're just getting that broke in. When you get to 50,000 cycles start thinking about a new model.

Yeah, good thought, Russ, but I tried that at first, too...nada. I changed to this lens some time ago. I do like the standard lens, though...much
better for close-ups, portraits, flowers, etc.

I googled your error message and looked at this thread:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/d40slr/discuss/7215760892036010...
I Solve It... Hi Guys, I had the same problem few months ago, after reading some similar posts and trying all suggestions I finally took my D40X to
Nikon, they spent two weeks in diagnostics to finally said that will cost me 150$ and 6 more weeks, I got my camera back and I try it and it was
working perfectly..
but...yesterday, after some months I got the same error, and here is the solution .
I took off the 8 screws at the botton plate and the screw hidden at the edge near the batery (you have to take off the battery).
After taking off the botton plate I saw a red gearwheel and I move it in any direction.. then I put the battery and Viola!!.. worked... then I put
back the botton plate... seems that the gear is part of the mechanics of the shutter that probably was stuck.
I Hope this helps, but remember my D40X was out of guaranty, because of that I dared to open it
Good luck !

Ken...my pic count was just the ones I put on this laptop, I think the D-40 has about 50K on it already! I am AVID!

I feel your pain/pleasure!
I had over 70,000 on my D80 when I bought the D7000 this year. Good that the life is 150,000 cycles on the D7000.

If you haven't got it going yet, try to remove the lens and re attach it or try a different lens.
Every now and again I get some weird issues on my older Nikon and this seems to help.
Hope it does.

Hi Roger...
Have you tried some WD-40 on it?
As we all know...the stuff works on just about anything!
Have used it on many electrical items and it doesn't seem to impede or interfere with electrical circuitry in any way.
Maybe you can drip some around the shutter button or in the above mentioned gear and/or anywhere else you think it might help.
