Sailing lessons
I would like to learn how to sail, i have a 19 foot powerboat but would like to sail, anyone know of sailing schools in the ensenada area, I could
learn in Richmond or berkeley ca. but the temps would not be as nice as in Baja. My resolution for 2012 is sailing!
Gracias nomadas de baja.

in summer, richmond and berkeley are warmer than ensenada!
lots of sailing schools in bay area; but few, if any, in ensenada.

Sailing...
I am starting sailing lessons in San Diego. I want to learn to sail too, as my dream is to putter around the Caribbean!!! Ensenada doesn't have any
Yacht Clubs, except for the Punta Banda Yacht Club, which only sails empty bottles of alcohol!!! | Quote: | Originally posted by deportes

I'll teach you to sail, free. To become a good sailor you'll have to commit to a 3-5 year training program...
Of course, and buy one of these:

Or you could do what I did. Read Chapman's reference book, learn the rules of the road, buy an old 30' sailboat, get out in the middle of a big body
of water and raise the sails. Then figure it out.
Of course, there are many times I wished I had served a more formal apprenticeship, because until about 10 years ago I didn't know what I didn't know.
There are many ways to get started. Many take a Power Squadron course to gain familiarity with boating safety and boat handling. Look into getting
onto the local yachting crew list for weekend sailing races. Since you're in the Bay area, check out 38 North for local sailing events, and consider
sailing as a crew member in next fall's BajaHaHa.
The best, and cheapest way to learn is to become friends with someone with a sailboat!
Avoid yellers and those prone to temper tantrums, don't sail with drunks! There are calm and competent sailors out there, you may have to look for a
while to find them.

...or take week off, go to a sailing school, sail all week, meet some new people, get a chance to try out a number of different boats, see if you like
sailing before spending money on boat and paraphernalia...
also, if you don't want to own a boat, there are lots of clubs that are cheap to join, where you use club boats on hourly or daily rate... same clubs
also offer lessons
clubs are cheapest way to use boats, especially if you only want to sail 1 weekend per month or less often

Much better advice than mine!
The main thing is to go do it! There are plenty of ways to get on the water without spending anything more than a Saturday or two. Connect with others
through one or two of the good resources provided in this thread, and go!
I was reacting to the idea that you need to commit several years to learning to sail. Of course, to become accomplished it takes a while, but don't be
put off by that, just get out there and try it.
