Escalera Nautica...final results.
What accually got "built" for this project?
I know of about 10 miles of nice wide paved road and a small harbor(filled with sand now?). Anybody been there recently? (Name must remain
"secret":lol
Other than that did anything else ever get built and in use?

I'll be driving that 25' foot wide road this week. Total waste except for my personal benefits. Wish they wouldn't have built that harbor. Good
thing they didn't make more harbors. Could've really screwed tourism even more.

I was told that the partially paved road to La Gringa was due to Nautica Escalera. La Gringa was targeted to be a 'ring' in the ladder.

The best way to get more US dollars down south, is put some shoulders on the road and make it 2' wider. Don`t need no stinken ladder to nowhere!!

i'm thinking there was a pot of gold at the end of that highway last week when it was huge! but once a year isn't really worth the time and effort.
i happen to know that the rocks that were blasted for the harbor were taken from the ranchers property and never paid for by the govt, no
environmental impact studies were ever done in the protected Valle de los Cirios, too much sand movement, etc.... but the road is nice-and the paved
pullouts for the big rigs to use...

I've attached three photos taken last summer. Things haven't changed much for the last three years or so. Yes, this "project" was just a big waste of
money and an environmental disaster-in-waiting, so I'm glad it hasn't gone anywhere. That said, the people of Santa Rosalillita now have electricity
and a nice road to get out to the highway on--something that matters a lot to them since they still have to truck in their water.

Just glad they never built any more harbours... and never destroyed any other beautiful coastlines on the Pacific coastlines! It would have been

Simply based on my 40+ years of traveling in Baja I would have to say it is still far too early to declare this project dead and buried. So many
projects have appeared to be abandoned and seem to sit idle for years until suddenly one day they are just finished and open.
As far as answering the question of what got completed I know a lot of work was done at Puerto Escondido and the Fidepaz Marina in La Paz has been
completed, paved road into Santa Rosallita, power lines into BoLA, new marina in Cabo, harbors in Santa Rosalia and Loreto, etc. etc. Who knows what
was part of normal infrastructure improvement and what got funding or even partial funding from Escalera Nautica but there has been a great many
improvements to the infrastucture of Baja in the last 25-30 years since this project was proposed.
I'd have to say this project is right on schedule for Baja and I am confident it will be completed "manana"

Don't know if it was just coincident in time or part of the "ladder", but the ramp at Puerto Lopez Mateos which was completed a couple of years ago
has made life easier for fishermen launching there. When the tide is high, as in the attached photo, you can actually use the ramp to launch a boat,
and when the tide is low the bank alongside the ramp has a suitable slope. It is no longer necessary to search along a mile or so of river bank to
find a place to launch where you can float your boat and not get stuck in the mud.
(In Loreto the ramp is the same. We just get to pay to use it now.)

The following was a July 2009 report:
According to news reports in a number of Mexican publications, FONATUR (Federal Tourism Promotion Fund) has announced that the much ballyhooed
Nautical Ladder's final form has been canceled and the assets of the 10 projects that have either been completed or partially completed will
be sold.
FONATUR, which over the past six years received more than $1500 million pesos of investment for the project from the federal government, made clear
that they no longer have a budget for further investment in it.
Juan Manuel Galarza Tohen, Director General of FONATUR port operations, is cited as saying Merrill Lynch will be the financial agent for the
divestiture process. The completed marinas include those in Mazatlan, Sinaloa; Puerto Escondido, La Paz and Santa Rosalia in Baja California Sur; San
Felipe in Baja California (Norte); San Blas, Nayarit; Puerto Peņasco and San Carlos, Sonora. In an unfinished state are marinas in Topolobampo,
Sinaloa and Santa Rosalillita, BCN.

Loreto Ramp Update
The powers that be here in Loreto have put up some new challenges in getting to the ramp (before they allow you to pay
to launch and find secure parking)...
These roads are scheduled to be done and re-opened sometime in April if they stay on their schedule..

Hey Woody, The rocks that were used to build the marina in Ensenada were blasted from the mountain side owned by Nachita Alvarado. She owned
"Nachitas Place" and you can still see the remains of the hotel on the left side before you get to the signal at the port entrance driving south off
of the toll road. It looks kind of like an old castle or fort, covered in grafitti now. She also owned the entire mountain which is both above and to
the west of the hotel. That's where the govt. blasted off the rock to build the breakwater, cruise ship harbor, etc. She told me when I was a kid
that the govt. just came in and took it, she never received a peso.

The malecon looks to be a bit of a (temporary) mess.... Sorry for my Loreto amigos.... I hope it will all be worth the time, energy, money, and
inconvenience and that the end product will be a nice improvement.
I'll be in Korea playing my cello in March / April, & I hope to be down late spring and see it all done. I really love to get up early and walk
the malecon and watch the sunrise!
