Spearo, using a whistle is fine if the dog can hear you, and except when you're hunting with more than one dog, which we often do..sometimes quite a
pack. My lab obeys hand signals out to 500 yards. Tha greatly increases your level and range of control.
My black lab, Gypsy, was so easy to train to hand signals, I almost began to believe she was a mind-reader. Stop, sit, right, left, come, go, circle,
levitate...etc. 
Excellent way to find downed birds that the dog did not spot at the shot. Pheasants, sharptail, huns, quail, doves, ducks in a slough with tall
weeds....all seem to fall in that hidden spot out there.
But..we are headed off base a bit...back to the dog 'naming' process!
How about "Rambo?" I like it, except for the weak 2nd syllable.. '-bo'
Everybody in all nations will know the name...and give it some respect!

I met a guy the other day with a cool-looking dog. I asked the owner,
"What's his name?"
The owner looked at me with a straight face and said ,"Askim!"
I asked a few more times until I realized I had the answer....and I had a good laugh with the owner 
I also really like the name "Colita" for a female pet...
It has that "hard k" sound...and a "hard t"... (tica in reverse?)

To Dana- "meant to be-" probably!! To BajaOkie- you perfectly described our 10 yr old Golden that passed away in June 2011 with cancer. He always had
a ball available and even after hours of play he would use his nose to push that ball to my feet begging for one more throw. That dog swam in
everything from the ocean in Alaska to the raging Colorado River to the mudhole that formed from the melting snow in back of our son's home. He would
mind perfectly until he smelled water. Once he smelled water, a made to order steak couldn't get him to listen!! We will be back to El Burro the end
of January- stop by to see us and bring your Goldens!! To Pompano- thanks for the input but if the new Golden is anything like our old Golden "Rambo"
doesn't fit. Maybe "lover" but definitely not "Rambo!!" To CaptKW- hola and good day to you also. We're picking her up on Jan 23rd and have decided
not to name her until we have her in our hot little hands. Lots of great suggestions that are much appreciated!!

Yes, you're right, absinvestor..'Rambo' was meant to be a tongue-cheek name for a gentle breed like Goldens. You can
imagine being knocked down and licked to death by a Golden Rambo...
I want you to meet Randy, my compadre & lifelong friend (by lifelong I mean since we are babes in the same double stroller...our mothers were best
friends, too.) Randy was raised with 5 goldens and he & wife, Ginny, have loved exactly 5 goldens at all times since he could afford
thier high expense...almost 40 years now.
Here is his current 5-member tribe. His last replacement golden pup.. a female...he named 'Willow'
Another female is named 'Olive'..
.....nice, gentle names for a nice, gentle breed?

To Pompano- thanks for the great pics. I have owned a lot of different breeds- muts, pugs, chows, shepherds, huskies, spaniels etc but have never
owned one any better for an overall companion than a golden. To CapKw- owner hasn't been found. We have agreed to adopt her and are in route to La Paz
to pick her up later this month. The thread is under "looking for owners of rescued golden retriever in La Paz."
