Organ Pipe Cactus -AZ

Headed for Baja via Hwy 8 through Yuma. I've never been to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument - is it worth the side trip as a day trip - overnight camp?

dont think they allow overnight camping...think this is where Homeland Security put up big signs warning of it being a drug traffic route...BUT it is beautiful and worth seeing

Yes they do allow overnight camping at primitive and regular asphalt campgrouds.
The prim camps are really cool and isolated. Go to Ajo and then south into the park. At the main office center you will be given a map of the primitive camp you may choose OR you can camp with the motor homes right there. Lots of cool walks and hikes. Unbelievablely cool place.

I tent camped there in the regular campground about 10 years ago. It was really a nice place to camp and explore but there were no showers at that time. Motorhomes and camper rigs over a certain length could not use the interior campgrounds. You might want to check on this if it applies to you. Lukeville had about 3 stores but it was easy to cross into Mexico and get your visa, insurance, etc. I remember it being a long uneventful trip to the park from IH 8 but I feel it was worth the drive.

If they have had any rain lately the Park is a riot of desert plants, and incredibly beautiful. You can take a day loop drive that is well worth it, and takes you thru wonderful desert areas with lots of history. It is especially nice in spring and early summer.

I love that place.
