We lived in GDL and it really is a beautiful and FUN city! If you are on Facebook, there is a great group called Mexpat Guadalajara. Also, Moon Handbooks published an excellent book titled 'Guadalajara' in '03 written by Bruce Whipperman and it was spot on. Not sure if it's been updated but I would still highly recommend it.

Hotel Frances is right downtown and reasonable. Can walk to a lot of sights from there. They have Mariachi night on Fridays. Sometimes great bands. It's one of the oldest hotels in the city but has lots of charm. Try to get a room on the 3rd floor not facing the same direction as the entrance. Noise factor!!
