Airport at Gonzaga

Does any one know if the air strip at Alphonsinas and Rancho Grande are open? Also does any one know the phone numbers for either place to verify?

Punta Final has a strip runway, yes?

Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

Yes! Many homeowners there use it (like at Alfonsina's).

Here is a look at Gonzaga Bay and its airports:

Punta Final (had 2 runways, may be using only one now):

Rancho Grande has 2 runways:

Alfonsina's (runway underwater at high lunar tides):

Papa Fernandez' airport has been closed.

Punta Bufeo, 5 miles north of Gonzaga (airport status unknown):

Joaquin Card##as, our landlord at Alfonsina's, posted a letter on the Baja Bush Pilots pages last week that said the airstrip would be closed for "another 3 or 4 weeks." He said that he was in Mexico City where he had met successfully with government officials to allow the airstrip to open but there were some "studies and impact statements" still to be done. He was sure that the airport would open, however...promised a month of free breakfasts at the cantina for anyone flying in and staying in the motel once the strip opens.

I heard that Rancho Grande was closed for the last month or longer. I don't know the reason. It may be the same as for Alfonsina's. I heard that the Army, which is camped about a mile from the Rancho Grande strip would come and kick you off if you landed there.

I also heard from a guy there now that Punta Final is open.

The best source of info....the straight skinny and not yer basic Bajs BS...is to call San Felipe Airport. The people there are courteous and honest.

I got an email from someone who reads Nomad and said there were piles of dirt on the Rancho Grande east-west runway 2 weeks ago and they were running a grader over it last week ... so re-surfacing it. Also said a plane landed at Alfonsina's runway. This person tried to join Nomad, but was not able to respond directly. Here is the main part of his message to you all:

>>>Hi David, Yes the east west one had many truckloads of dirt dumped on it when I was heading south a couple weeks ago, then they were starting to grade it when I went thru last week heading back north. one plane landed from San Ignacio at Alphonsina's while I was there so I assume that was fine.<<<

the recent late in the day landing at Alfi's by a baja newbie was a tale of terror reported on BBP a couple of weeks ago.
they were lucky but were definitely EFFED with by the 2 sep military crews who were on diff missions.
