San Ysidro to Sta Rosalia How's Mex 1?
Detours, delays, bridges out potholes, good restaurant deals, etc.

Just did it and the road is in good shape except for the cut in the hill below Maneadaro and the little stretch coming into Jesus y Maria. Spent my
last night at Baja Cactus, seems that 103-105 were rented out to a group of Koreans who thought it was great to talk loudly all night until a
screaming gringo scared a couple of them about 2:30 in the morning. I just can not imagine who that might have been.
I have tried a lot of different meals at Mama Espinoza's but the crab soup came highly reccomended so now I am treating diarrhea. Guess I will be
stopping at Los Jardines from now on.

You know, the extra 45 minutes you gain by getting to Baja Cactus just isn't worth it to me anymore. Mama's has made me sick the last two times. I
gave them the benefit of the doubt, and got sick again, so no more. Jardines has a great restaurant, and nice rooms too. For 45 minutes, for me,
it's not worth it. I'll stop early, and enjoy my meal and sleep.

I've gotten a room in the old section of Baja Cactus for two hundred pesos. I wonder how much rooms are in Jardines? WiFi?
My blinders must have been on coming through San Quintin and Lazaro Card##as. Where about's is Jardines located? Is it easy to find?

You can turn at the Old Mill and Don Don Eddie's sign and go down to the first left, turn there and get to the Baja Jardine's or you can go to the
next road to the south of the 'signs' street on Mex 1 and turn right at the first intersection - and get to Jardines.
For 2 with 2 small dogs - 550 pesos. Yes, WiFi and gret restaurant - that is closed Monday's.
No more Baja Cactus and Mams's for me.

It is a real shame that Mama's people just seem to have a problem getting it together. I think back at all of the meals I have had there as I travel
that section 4 or 5 times a year. I really like the people and everyone is really friendly and I sure don't want the wrath of David the investig8or,
but they just can not seem to successfully run a restaurant. Out of the last few years, the only thing that seems to be acceptable is the beef steak
ranchero. So, by the time I got back to Santa Rosalia, I had already made up my mind that it is Los Jardines for sure.

The last few times we've stopped at Mama's, it appeared as if the extended family was leeching off the business. In other words, plenty of people who
were some how connected to the business were eating/playing around in the restaurant and oblivious to any off the customers or their needs. Last time
in, a we noticed a group eating lobster, drinking beer, and didn't lift a finger as we waited to be helped. I'm sure the place would be much
different if Mama was still running the place.

My sentiments, exactly. Been doing Jardines for the past several years. Good thing Guillermo expanded to 20 rooms, given its popularity.
We last stayed there on our way North last Friday. Because we were not sure how far we would be able to travel, we waited until we had cell service in
El Rosario to call them. Got Fernando on the phone. He confirmed two rooms for our party. Upon our arrival, he was turning away a couple because they
were full. And that was around 4pm.
Singles are $35usd. Doubles are $50usd. Free wifi.
Restaurant arguably the best between Ensenada and Loreto.

Sure it was handy to have a restuarant next door to Baja Cactus, but the two are not 'connected'... so go to another restaurant in El Rosario... there
are several sit down places besides the taco stands.
For awhile, like in 2009... Mama's grandson was running the place, and it was clean, fast service, and good food... Then Mama's daughter 'Roli' was
(again) back in charge at our last visit... and that may explain the return to poor service or bad food.
Can we get Chef Gordon Ramsey to shake it back into shape?

It so nice to just go next door after a long day. It would seem to me that they are aware of their decline in popularity and they should be ashamed of
the poor reputation they've made. There are some good manager/cooks out there that could bring it back and still the family would make money.
