Costco Coming To La Paz?
Well, what have all of you heard? I, for one, would be stoked to not have to drive to CSL.

The was a rumor that a Costco was going in at the new Soriana plaza by Home depot but someone on the La Paz Gringos yahoo group finally contacted
Costco HQ or the manager of the shopping center development (I don't recall which) and the response was negativo- no Costco planned, at least at that
location.

Does la Paz have a wal mart or SAMs club ? Also , we are moving our boat from loreto to LaPaz to experience a different area of Mexico. We will leave
our boat in storage while we are in the states but while we are there what are the top three marinas to moor the boat that are secure and a hotel is
adjacent or nearby . We know about Costa Baja and Hotel marina but want the veteran report.
Thanks Nomads

Yes, La Paz has a Walmart and a Sam's club (in the same location) which is across from the Home Depot mentioned previously. Don't know anything about
marinas.

I have often wondered about the lack of a Costco in La Paz. Remember that Comercial Mexicano is the Mexican partner in Costco de Mexico.
Never understood why there literally was no Costco between Ensenada and Cabo. Especially given the major shipping port in La Paz.
So, just where will we find the second WalMart in Ensenada?
Some facts: WalMart of Mexico, or WalMex has over 700 stores nationwide. However, their growth was mainly spurred by their purhase of Cifra, which had
many stores in Mexico.
Jeronimo Aranga was the guy that developed Cifra, and ultimately sold it to WalMart. He, today, an 80-something guy, was recently listed as among the
top ten richest men living in the Los Angeles area.

and for Marinas - don't forget the Bercovich jungle. That's an experience!

There's one in the San Quintin area. And, Calimax is building a store there, too.
Welcome to the big time, San Quintin!

There is a sign in the new Mega store that says Costco is coming soon and the sign out by the new Liverpool says that mall is scheduled to open Aril
23rd? I am assuming that is where the new Costco is going in because last year they had a sign up which has since been destroyed by weather but it
advertised Costco, Starbucks and many others. Now if I can just get a In & Out I'll be set!

There is one in Constitucion. It's rather junkie, with merchandise packed so close together that you have trouble getting the cart around. Building
should have been twice the size.

Does Comercial Mexicana operate the Mega stores? Cause that's who is licensed to operate the Costco over here in Hermosillo.
There are now at least 3 Walmarts in Hermosillo and 2 Sams. Also saw a Starbucks and a Chili's restaurant.
One Walmart and one Sams in Guaymas.

Yep! CoMex operates under like 9 different names.
My understanding is that the Costco deal is on the order of a 50-50 with Costco US.
http://www.comercialmexicana.com/main.aspx?
And given our recent experience in Ensenada, it would appear that the various divisions retain a certain amount of autonomy.
As most folks know, a Comercial Mexicana store and a Costco store are located on the East side of the main drag, across a side street from each other.
We had time to kill last week and went shopping at the farmacia in each store. We priced several items that are Rx only NOB and found the CoMex store
to be less expensive than the Costco.
Example: the asthma rescue inhalers- generic Ventolin- Salbutemol, were about $1us cheaper that the CoMex. Go figure.
