Honeymoon in Baja
We are getting married in a few weeks and are in the planning stages of our first Baja trip which will also be our honeymoon!
Dates: Dec 24-jan 5
Transport: Driving our lifted 4x4 4 Runner.
We are looking to go camping, eat and drink our way down the Baja Peninsula. Not sure of the exact plans as of yet or how far down we want to go.
We want to do some off roading but also not get to crazy with it.
Looking for places to go places to avoid and everything in between.
Also any other tips or suggestions.

Congratulations! Wife #1 and I did our honeymoon in Baja... combined camping with hoteling... that was in 1985.
Keep your plans open and just go with the flow... Christmas/ New Years is a busy time, but maybe not as much with tourism so poor.
What do you both like to do or want to see/ experience? You have the perfect vehicle... Toyota!

We love to swim, camp, hike, eat and drink! Haha. We really want to get in some whale watching but mostly just go with the flow. Looking for
good little spots with great seafood, tacos etc. Also looking to do a part camp park hotel trip. Not looking to go in to Cabo.
Just ordered the Baja Almanac and got several books and maps.

Please click on my July 2012 trip report link (below) for a few ideas... Cabo is not our destination, just something to see for my wife's first time
there. We stayed in La Paz with other Nomads.
I suggest a trip to Bahia Asuncion and stay with Juan and Shari at their seaside Bed & Breakfast or beachside RV campground. They are 'locals' and
both fishing and whale watching experts, and just plain nice people who will show you a great time.
Down the coast a ways is La Bocana, and Baja Blanca has a real luxury room at her Bed & Breakfast... Other places to see, Bahia San Luis Gonzaga,
Bahia de los Angeles, San Ignacio (take the paved side road 2 miles into town), Mulege, Bahia Concepcion, Loreto... take the mostly paved road up to
San Javier, too!

My Wife really loved camping on Shell Island - it is real easy camping where you can be alone and experience the flow of nature. 4x4 is
required!

Be sure to have an Air Compressor for all of the beach camping you might find yourself doing. The San Felipe area is my wife's favorite.

Just South of Ensenada - El Palomar in Santo Tomas serves up a great breakfast, and it isn't crowded (unless, Baja Grande has come to town!).
Baja doesn't have too many dirt roads like this one.  Jacume (near Tecate, BCN)

When you go south of Ensenada, be aware that there are few places to obtain cash. Your last ATM along Hwy 1 is in San Quintin (Los Pinos Gas Station)
until you reach Guerrero Negro. Just an F.Y.I.

My Wife also liked Costa del Sol Motel in San Quintin

LA BUFADORA
As you leave Ensenada, this is a POPULAR TOURIST DESTINATION. That might not be a good thing, but my Wife requests that we visit every time we go
anywhere near Ensenada.

Winter can be chilly and windy (or warm and wonderful). I like camping at Punta Chivato, check the current status the campground there. Nice
snorkeling (brrr) and some shore fishing. I also like the East Cape area. Last time my wife and I went down we stayed at a small palapa rental which
was secluded and pretty much wonderful. We loved our time there. Also snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo.
As for whales Nomad Shari seems to be the expert, it may be too early to stop at Laguna Ojo de Liebres,

Hi there goodvibes and welcome to the Nomad community sand box! And congratulations for tying the knot. The mid west coast of baja has nice water
temps around Christmas for boogie boarding, surfing, and the hiking is great too so stop in and see us...maybe get a surf lesson in on your honeymoon!
We have a xmas holiday surf tournament here in Asuncion and the New Years dance party is always a riot...you can camp here and it's super safe and
fun. then you can amble down the road to visit Baja blanca in La Bocana and camp at Campo Rene too...this is a sweet area to visit and has warmer
water and air temps than the gulf side that time of year.
The whale watching starts just after new years at Ojo de Liebre in Guerrero Negro and you will see a few newborn calves and maybe get to see a birth
this time of year....great place to camp too and real friendly folks there.

You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the info. I will be going through this with detail over the next few weeks. I have not downloaded MANLY MAN
TOYOTA BAJA ADVENTURE but will search it out. Whats the water temp during this time of year? I grew up in Hawaii but live in Santa Cruz now and
really really miss the warm waters. I am guessing the farther south we go the water would be warmer?

the water temps here due to a warm current that graces our shores is between 70-75 degrees...check your U2U private mail box por favor up in the right
hand corner under the sign in.

come and see us in la bocana and definitely spend some time at campo rene and punta abreojos too ... those can be day trips out from la bocana.

My advice is to be sure to have food and drinks stocked up for Christmas because you might not, probably not, find anything open. Gas too since you
won't find a gas station either. My husband and I put solar Christmas lights on our palapa and ate special treats we saved for that day.
Also, if you don't want to rough it, Pete's Camp in San Felipe is nice with a great bar and good food. We like to rustic camp so it wasn't for us but
it is a nice to luxury camp with bathrooms, showers, reasonably priced food and cold beer.
