Qualitas is the company that Lewis and Lewis (an American broker) uses...see my previous post on this thread
and check your u2u...see the little box in the upper right hand corner re messages

I was wondering about the $ for the VW, they generally
go by mid blue book, in your case I don't think that
would be as much as you quote. I've bounced around
with different Mex Ins Brokers/Co's., I got scared off
of Lewis& Lewis, Mex Ins Co. Qualitis, not from any
persoanl experience, just what has been posted here.
The Mex Ins Co, in my opinion, is far more important
than the US Broker, if you have to deal with an incident.
For the libility portion, I would never have the minimum
$50k, at least 100K. I've seen positive posts re:
HDI and Ace Mex Ins Cos, not trying to sell you on
any US Broker that advertises here

Been going here "forever". I actually called their office and talked to a human that was working from California!
Great service. Great help. Great prices.
We get everything done on line there.......fishing licenses too.
BTW. I copy everything including legal travel docs to a email account....should I misplace anything......and need it in Mexico ASAP.
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

Vagabundos = liability only
Baja Bound = Full coverage but still working on value
Lewis & Lewis = Legitimate appraisal needed, insured to value

Looks like Baja Bound came through. Their underwriter HDI Seguros will insure the van for stated value but in the event of a total loss their
appraisers in the USA will have to determine the value of the van but will take in to account any receipts I have as well as market appraisels.
At least the NADA has this van high retail at $10,300. It's at least a starting point.

Here is a recommendation from an appraiser that I think is brilliant.
Take the paper appraisal and photos of whatever it is you are insuring and put them in a sealed envelope. Mail it to yourself and in the event you
have a total loss claim at some point you have dated and sealed evidence as proof of value and condition.

These guys are not only there when you buy your policy - they are than when you have an accident and need to coordinate between the Mexican Insurance
Company, their Mexican and US adjusters and then really fight for you to help resolve disputes.
Bottom line? I WILL ALWAYS BUY MY MEXICAN INSURANCE from BAJABOUND!!!!
P.S. They are really nice people as well

Could you please clarify about "same insurance company". Both websites show a list of policies from a number of companies - Ace, HDI etc.
Discoverbaja website is strange, btw. After a lot of questions - vehicle type, value, trip date etc etc, it shows a few policies .... without price
quote. They do offer a cheap annual liability insurance - cheap after you've bought the Discoverbaja membership, so the difference from Bajabound
eventually is not significant.
As to those remarks at the beginning of the tread... IMO, that kind of response was to be expected, given the form and content of the question. What
was to be insured - car, trailer, car with trailer, motorhome? What coverage? Or it doesn't matter as long as the company is "reputable"  ?
Edit - PS: things like Westy should have been disclosed from the moment one. Normally, 1985 van is worth nothing. Your van, however, is a collectible,
it's a different creature. Not all the insurers will suit you, and it's not about "reputability" either. Just a non-standard situation.

I asked if there was a list of recommended insurers available for Mexican auto insurance, nothing more. This isn't my first forum rodeo by any means.
So no, I do not believe the type of responses I received this morning were warranted but as with everyone, Alm you are entitled to your opinion.
This is the 'Baja Questions & Answers' thread. I asked a simple question as to whether there was a current list of recommended auto insurers, not
where to find complete coverage for my seemingly overpriced Westfalia according to the 43 year used car veteran, or information on type of coverage
available. I simply asked for a list of insurers so I could do my own due diligence.
Maybe the energy of the thread got diluted because the snarky poster kept deleting his posts after I would reply. Fire at me... I fire back. I don't
like disrespectful people.

Alm, the Mex. insurance conpany is HDI Seguros and the agents are either BajaBound or Discover Baja. Sorry I didn't clarify these bits of data before!

Short and not too polite answer would be: "No".
To a different - more clear - kind of question one could receive a different - more informative - kind of answer. Nobody was "firing" at you, it was
more like stepping on a rake. Shoot it if this makes you feel better ...
Back to the question - again, there is no "list". There are few Mex companies doing this, not too many. And there are - fewer yet - US brokers for
those Mex companies. Again, not much in the way of "recommended" - as you have probably realized already. Personally, I agree with one of the posters
that US broker doesn't matter much.

I wouldn't buy it for 20K, though it does sell for that much or more, depending on condition and other details. It's not just a collectible, it's a
"cult" car. Symbol of long gone hippy era. Pragmatic Krauts stopped making it decades ago. They did make a modern version with front water-cooled
engine, but it wasn't that popular - didn't look like those old vans.

SCOTTAJDAL,,BTW welcome to nomads !! question 1. do you have any experience driving in baja ?? Myself dont look at insurance as a car saver,,just
keeps you legel and I have drove a Nice RV with a nice boat thur baja !! my point is to learn how to stay out of an accedents in the first place and
have you car/truck/rv/bus road warrior ready ,... . just a saying..me & the wife counted 12 burned up VW transporters between TJ and cabo a
fewyears back..K&T ............ ps..I kept my tounge!!!

Yes... Been driving in Baja on and off for 12 years but only in rental cars and not from USA border to La Paz as we will be doing in November.
As far as burned up Westfalias and VW Buses go... The primary problem is rotted fuel lines and a worn out plastic fuel firewall fitting that snaps and
spews fuel at 120psi all over the hot engine and exhaust. We have an active thread on The Samba listing current information on burned up and crashed
vans. Jimmy Buffet just last year lost his 100k hard top Syncro Westfalia due to the barn it was stored in burning down. Sad!
My van is essentially new inside and out including a brand new Subaru EJ25 2.5l SOHC engine dyno'd at 185hp. So 20k may seem absurd to some but in
actuality to properly build out and restore one of these vans with quality parts, not Chinese aftermarket garbage, costs a lot of money. I own it to
use it.
If you are bored you should check out EBAY and look at the how much the air cooled 60's and 70's vans are selling for, especially the pre 68 split
windows.
BajaBound just hooked up another The Samba member with a fully covered policy for 25k for his Syncro Weekender.
This thread has run its course... Might be time to lock it or even burn it down.

What the Hell are you doing awake this time of the morn ??? BTW I know nothing bout nothing lest the Fact that Cly 3 burned the EX valve and the
insulation on the wire loom was /is A major problem with rear mounted motors !! myself have been having a BAD sleeping problem !! usally Im
waking up at this time of day...K&T.......PS..Just so you get a small
pic...my northern home is santa cruz ca... seen maybe 1 or 2 VW'S...But,,,, I give ya credit !! BTW..a jetta or passet diesel motor is a good switch

Fuel pressure can get nutty in a Vanagon
"Fuel pressure regulator - Very uncommon but we have run into this one a couple of times. A blown fuel pressure regulator will result in the fuel
pressure jumping from in the 40 lbs of pressure range to 100+ lbs of pressure. Van will run extremely rich. Tested with a fuel pressure gauge
connected off the fuel line T near the oil breather tower".
