Where to buy a telcel phone in TJ

We want to get a phone so we can call home and a friend told me to get the "american plan" he said I can call home for 20 minutes for $1, is this true? If so where can I get one in TJ that is close to the border? We will be riding the trolly down and spending a day.

There is a Large Telcel Office on Ninos Heroes Blvd. in Tijuana

And here is a link to the English language help page on the Telcel website: http://www.telcel.com/portal/beforeyouleave/begin.do?languag...

They generally advise that you should inform your regular telephone provider that you will be traveling in Mexico and have the provider modify your phone to accept calls.

But, the Telcel office will happily sell you a prepaid phone for your use.

They accept credit and debit cards for payment.

I have used my phone in Mex before but it is very expensive, I need to check in on my business regularly so I momitor my emails via WIFI but sometimes I need to talk right now. A friend says that with his Telcel phone he can call the states for 20 minutes and it cost $1, seems like a bargain even with the cost of the phone which I can use year after year.

Mula that was kinda part 2 of my question, I used my freinds phone when I was there in May and thats what he told me. I know I put $10 (US) on his phone while I was there and made several calls back to Oregon and It didn't run out on me. Sems like it was true can anybody else verify that plan?

If you are going to have wifi available, you can get a skype, vonage ,or majicjack app for a smartphone, laptop, ipod, or ipad, that will allow you to make and receive calls. I use majicjack on my laptop and a free Mj app on my ipod touch and it works great.

Telcel Amigo Combinado 20 plan

FYI - I'm currently paying about 5.8 cents (usd) per minute for calls to the US from BCS on the Telcel Amigo Combinado 20 plan.

Even cheaper (free) I use Google voice from the house in Rosarito. US 800 & 866 calls, too....which you can't call from MX. (Unless someone knows a secret code)

Go with Telcel, better coverage. Plus, Carlos needs your money.

If you will have a computer with you, and you do not use satelliet internet (works best with internet cable or DSL), get a MagicJack Plus.

You connect it to your Computer or router, plug in a phone, and free calls to the US (after you buy the MagicJack). When we call the states it's clear and always works.

That's why it's Movistar instead of MoviEstar.......

Both plans are comparable. Depends on where you will be and what the coverage is. Where we live and hang out, Movistar works best for us.
