I was wondering if anyone is using a satellite dish for email when boondocking in the middle of nowhere when traveling in Baja, Mex mainland, and
Central America so you can still tend to business when needed?

Do you know if there are any "pay as you go" satellite internet plans now? I would only use it for emailing so wouldn't use much bandwidth at all.

http://www.sailmail.com/
The attached link is to Sailmail which allows business uses, or you can use Airmail for personal e-mails with a ham license. We have used Airmail
both on our boat in remote areas and also in the backcountry of Baja from our car. Wih the ham license with world-wide communication from a mobile
unit, e-mail is quite easy reasonably fast (no photos), reliable, and pretty much unlimited. Do some research on both and the Pactor unit (modem)
needed. The answer is out there depending on your needs and resources.

Haven't seen any used systems out there, most stay with the boat.
For email it is the best, down fall no pics

"The Ham networks offer greater geographic coverage and contain more stations than SailMail or any other HF network. Further, the ham networks do
not have any limits on connect-time, and permit users to send and receive file attachments like images and binary executables. By comparison,
SailMail has usage limits of 90 minutes per week and only passes certain attachments (e.g. weather data). Note, however, that while it is appropriate
to send business-related messages over the SailMail system, business messages are not permitted on the Ham networks."...from the link I posted.
Winlink (http://www.winlink.org/) is the ham version of Sailmail, it is free to use, software is free. You need a ham license to use the system which can
be obtained with some studying. Testing for the ham license is now being done by volunteer examiners. The equipment needed is the ham radio and
Pactor modem. Cost? Depends on used, new, etc. Lots of info on the web.

What is the CHEAPEST way I could set myself up to send emails like this? I assume that would mean buying used equipment...

I hear ya but I have a website that will pay for my travels and requires me to check email every couple days. I'm just checking all of my options
here. If I can't do this remote email thing SIMPLE and CHEAP then I'll have to hire one of those customer service outfits to handle customer issues
and questions for me.

If I had a pile of money to dip into or monthly checks from a pension or SS then I'd say "to hell with email" but since I'll be doing this on a
pay-as-I-go basis then I need to figure this stuff out.

PASSING THRU
To be Truly challenging, a journey, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest..otherwise you are doomed to routine
tranverse..travel belongs to the wanderers of the the world who cannot,or will not, fit in..if you are contemplating a journey and you have the
means, abandon the adventure until your fortune change..only then will you know what travel is about !! " I have always wanted to go, but I cant
afford it !! what these folks can't afford is NOT to go..They are emeshed in the cancerous discipline of "security" And in worship of sercecurity we
fling are lives beneath the wheels of routine---and before we know it our lives are gone...what do we need---really need?? A few pounds of food each
day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in--and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment...Thats all--in the material
sense, and we know it..But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, preposterous
gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention from the sheer idiocy of the charade..The years thunder by..The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie
caked in dust on the shelfs of patience..Before we know it,,the tomp is sealed...Where,then,lies the answer?? In choice..Which shall it be: bankruptcy
of purse or bankruptcy of LIFE ??
