Recommendations for a trip down the other side
Hey all you Gulf/Sea of Cortez lovers!
We are ready to embark on our trip to Asuncion for the holidays, but want to mix it up a bit and drive down through San Felipe and hit up the other
side of the Peninsula for once! So exciting!
Would you fine feathered friends help us out? Needing some ideas of places to stay (2 adults, 2 children, 2 big mutts, and a small Baja mutt), places
to see, places to EAT! What's on your "Not To Be Missed" List?? I've got my camera and lots of batteries, so bring it on!!

We are really just driving through, maybe staying a day if there is a Not to be missed thing to do. Wanting to stay over night a bit further south,
possibly Gonzaga. We are mainly just wanting to see a side of Baja that we normally miss, as we always travel the Pacific side. Anyone traveled lately
and have any road news, warnings, etc?

San Felipe area
I just came back about a week ago. The road to San Felipe is great. There was a big bump where the new paving was being done near the gold mines. I
think it's about kilometer 130-140. Just pay attention if you don't see the painted lines there might be a bump. The road is not paved all the way
to Gonzaga, stops about 15-20 miles short. From there south it will be dirt. I went as far as Cocos corner. Not sure what you are driving but it
will be slower... But different scenery.

You will love it! Try San Felipe, Gonzaga (stay at Alfonsina's), Coco's Corner, then out to the highway. The roads are in great shape for the most
part. Of course, you will have some rocky dirt road from about 10 miles north of Gonzaga all the way to Highway 1.....

we are driving a 2wd by default, since our breakdown last year in Jesus Maria. Is is makeable by 2wd? Do you think we'll need reservations at
Alfonsina's and are they dog friendly? Only the little dog would go inside, but she's fine in the car as well, she is a Baja mutt, afterall.

We are coming through San Luis, we know the route up to there, but the rest will be new ~ woot! Any gas recommendations? We already know the "always
get gas" part of Baja, but do you recommend carrying extra? And cell service...is it sketchy or should we just figure on none?

2wd will be fine....
Reservations wouldn't hurt if you have the time to make them. I think they are dog friendly - we had my friend's puppy in the dining room and it
wasn't a problem! However, we camped the last trip and didn't stay in the rooms. The staff loved the pup!
Gas up in San Felipe and then Gonzaga. From there, you should be able to make it to Jesus Maria or GN no problem.
Cell service is great if you have AT&T, Verizon usually sucks.....

We actually will be using our Telcel, any word on that? And thanks Willard! We will most likely be through before then, but that is a very helpful
tip. Unless you are pulling my leg, and I promise, one day I will get you!

The Gonzaga Pemex is also closed for siesta 2-4. It is 12 or less miles from the end of pavement. 2WD will keep you from exploring but you will enjoy
the views and less traffic than on Hwy. 1.

Tellcell worked good for our team during the 1000 below San Felipe, not so good at
cocos. the closer you get to the bigger towns the better the phone works!
It is a great drive. We are trying to be at bay of La on the 29th, 30th. hope it
works out.

Personally, I have not seen a "Not to be missed thing to do" in San Felipe.
The only thing that might come close is experiencing the great tidal change. It's pretty incredible seeing the tide go out a quarter mile in a couple
hours and then walking out on all that sand. That doesnt happen in many parts of the world. I think San Felipe's tides are in the top ten greatest
tidal changes in the world.

Indeed! 20ft. + tide change and a shallow sea bottom can really expose a lot of land for a few hours every day. During the full and new moon phases,
you see two highs and 2 lows every 24 hours that can take the water out a mile!
These are all taken about 20 miles south of San Felipe (Shell Island)... a 2WD can drive in at Rancho Percebu and see the effect!

Construction on the the new road to Gonzaga has some confusing side road accesses on and off. Do not drive this at night.
Alfonsina's usually fills up on weekends.
In the old days I would take 30 gal of emergency gas. Nowadays 10 gal seems more than enough.
My phone is AT&T on world wide roam and works great.
You will not need 4WD to Mex1.

If you fill at San Felipe and Gonzaga is closed, you can still get gas further south at the Bahia de L.A. junction or maybe even closer at Chapala.
You may even get all the way to a Pemex at Jesus Maria.

If the Pemex at gonzaga is closed you can get gas at Rancho Grande which is almost just across from the Pemex. I have gotten gas there when the Pemex
is closed.they also have a fairly well stocked store.

This is a way cool tip....where do I track these tidal changes?
