OK....just as in other scenarios at the gate, some people arn't presented the full picture and are waved through. Good deal, for them.
Others are treated by the book as I was. Returning from Chula Vista Discount Tire store with four new mounted tires on my vehicle, along with the old [but still Baja good]tires in the car . I was going to give them to my worker.
They flagged me into secondary and told me of the problem. No unmounted tires past this point.
I wasn't in the mood to fight for them so I pulled them out of the car and stacked them next to a trash can saying, "Here. Keep them." That was it.

It was just my luck of the draw for that day and it could happen to anybody.

They finally let me pass.

A family member brought several Boxes of used clothes when questioned they told the customs offical the clothes were to be donated to the Poor People. His reply was there are no poor people in Mexico and wouldnt let them cross.

I've wrecked tires on few occasions in Baja and have had to buy a used tire from Lantera's out in the boonies . Going rate seems to be 30-40 USD for a a very sketchy looking bald tire (15" LT) - good argument for carrying an extra mounted spare.

A rock put a big hole in a new tire between El Huerfanito and Gonzaga Bay in 2002 (driving fast, at full pressure)... the Rancho Grande Tire shop had a perfect size spare used tire... so I didn't worry about no spare for the rest of that trip. Viva Llanateras!
