Discover Baja is easy. Then just have the visas stamped when passing through the border.

There is a thread about this...
as I recall it is at the new border crossing SB, on the right side before you cross into Mexico.
Does anyone know if the original Immigration office and bank are still open for pedestrians crossing into Mexico?

Blanca we had a huge thread on this you might want to put in a search for El Chaparral, the name of the new crossing complex and directions, there you
will find all the info you need.

Thanks! Sounds like a lunch in Tecate is in order.

Just cross the border when they can accept the money for the more than 1 week FMM. Otherwise, get a pre-paid FMM and stop at the border to have it
stamped for the times the teller is closed at the border.

I stopped at the new immigration building at chaparral on 2 December to check it out. Immigration and payment office are open 24hours.
There is another payment counter to pay duty on items that you declare.
Stay in the right lane as you come to the border and you will see the excellent signs directing you.

I've been wondering that too, I understand that the reg
Pedestrian crossing into Mex at SY is now on the east
side of the border, just to the east side of the US Customs
bldg. Seems difficult to get to the original Mex Imm office
that is/was on the so. side of the border. I don't believe
the new Chaparral crossing has a ped entry. Maybe I'll
go take a look this weekend. Things change but I believe
Mex Consulates in the US stopped issueing tourist cards
way back when, like 10 yrs. +. I too never saw the benifit
of paying approx $34 for a prepaid fmm, perhaps if
you are already a member and get Ins thru the Club,
and maybe if you're crossing off hrs. and are hesitent
of the bank teller being open

I don't think there is any benefit in getting those visas in advance via consulate or Discoverbaja. It's just a piece of carton with your name. You
will still have to pay and stamp it at the border - both acts can be done only at the border.

The mexican consulate in San Bernardino does not issue visas, or permits as they called the 7 day.

As members of Vagabundos del Mar, getting our boat and auto insurance from them, this year we opted for the prepaid FMMs. When we crossed the border
at the new Chapparal crossing just before 6 AM the end of November, we presented a fully typed out prepaid FMM form (Vagabundos typed it out based
upon our application) to Immigration, had only to sign and date, no need to go anywhere else. We were stamped and done and on our way. 5 minutes at
the most. Will continue to get prepaid FMMs.

I did not see anyone issuing tourist visas when we crossed on foot .... by car, it seems pretty straight forward.
If going on foot, do you cross over thebridge and then backtrack towards the border?

One more bit of information.
We were told that the 7 day had to be turned in to immigration when departing Mexico and they can't be mailed. I asked how we got to the chaparral
location and they said to park near the old border crossing and walk across to the new office. I asked how we could safely cross all the lanes of
traffic and the agent said that someone would help us across.

I've been told the new southbound pedestrian crossing goes behind the McDOnalds at the end of the trolly tracks.
From there, I don't know, but the footbridge is no longer used.

When you cross into Mexico, the first window or office is/was INM (Immigration)... You got to stop at that window, or walk into that door and interact
to get your tourist card.. Since tourist cards are not needed by everyone, they don't stop each person or each car and check.
Tourist cards are required for stays anywhere in Mexico over 72 hours and required anytime you go south of the 'border zone' (in the past was down to
Maneadero or San Felipe, but seems now to be the entire state of Baja California 'Norte' as there is no check for one until you cross into Baja
California Sur, and only on Hwy. 1).

Got my tourist card today easy
Husband has Fm 2 but I have been to lazy to keep up so had to get Tourist card for our trip south the next two weeks. Super Easy. Go to parking area
behind big poles at new crossing. the immigration office is through the first building to left. Very helpful gentleman in office today, even walked
me the 40 steps at most to bank teller. In and out in less than 10 minutes. Once you get card you just go back into the entry lanes. Different in
that you get your tourist card before inspection area now.

I never saw them in the past either. Because they are sitting in the office, I guess. It's cooler and quieter there, and not every pedestrian needs
visas. You go in there when you need to buy a visa - they don't come out for you
... With cars it appears like "straightforward" because again not everybody needs visas - they could've bought it already and now are re-entering, or
going for 72 hours only, or they are on annual visa.
