Any ideas how to help this sea lion? UPDATE

UPDATE to Sea Lion wrapped in net:
So, after dozens of calls to everyone we could think of, my wife was finally able to speak with Sarah Wilkin of NOAA, who, after seeing these same disturbing pictures, put her in touch with PROFEPA in San Felipe. They were awaiting the phone call and made the trip down to PF within the week... conditions were too windy to do anything so they returned on Dec. 28. They met us at our house and I took 3 of the 5 of them out on my boat to the rock island (see pics), Conrado Perez headed the operation along with his coworkers, they netted the sea lion, once into the truck drove her 5 hours north to Mexicali to Vets Julio Mercado and Sergio Mercado of the zoo of Mexicali, who volunteered to help the sea lion. After 2 weeks, Conrado and his colleagues of PROFEPA, along with a few others, drove the recovered gal back to PF and released her back into the water. She is expected to recover fully, see attached pictures. We are so grateful to Conrado, PROFEPA, and the vets who cared for her and look forward to having a good relationship with them in the future.

good job!

did PROFEPA staff do all the capture/transport? or were local fishermen involved?
for future reference, who should be called for seal/whale entanglement?

i did not know there was a zoo in mexicali...

PROFEPA did the capture and transport in their own vehicle. They did not have a boat, so we used mine. I would indeed contact them with any entanglement issues. They were very enthusiastic and proud of their job. Let me know if you need contact information.

If we could look at the gill netting issue, that would eliminate a lot of the problems.

Shari, we just spent a little time with Ken and am looking forward to seeing you in Scammon's mid. Feb. Are you going to be there?

SEA LION

.. this is actually Brewers better 1/2, he's down south... not sure why some of you are not able to read the update, but the sea lion is doing well and recovering on 'her rock' in Punta Final. We are so pleased with PROFEPA San Felipe, specifically Conrado Perez who was instrumental in making this rescue happen. Julio Mercado is a vet in Mexicali who is opening an animal hospital called LYON Vetrinario Hospital. He regularly helps Conrado with injured animals, and preformed surgery and rehabilitation free of charge to our sea lion. I am requesting that anyone who has offered to help financially, or cares to, direct their contributions his hospital. It is scheduled to officially open in the next week, please u2u Brewer if you need the address or more contact info. Julio Mercado is a licensed vet did his residency at the San Diego Zoo, he is specifically trained in large animals and conservation and I believe he will continue to be an advocate and asset to wildlife conservation in this region.
